Recycling has been one of the biggest movements in response to pollution, and dealing with the huge amounts of waste produced by today’s society. Of the biggest problems with recycling is that there are a lot of plastics, and other products that aren’t recyclable yet. A lot of progress has happened recently in recycling abilities, but there are many products and luxuries that we use today that come in packaging that isn’t easily recycled. This is where the company Terracycle comes in. Terracycle is a company that collects hard to recycle wastes and either recycles the materials, or upcylces them for new purposes.
TerraCycle is going to turn your trash into KME's cash! These are all the items we are collecting.
A Rochester family helps the environment by recycling items that are usually not recyclable. Cheryl Bertou runs a small makeshift recycling canter in her basement. "We raised about $200.00 and kept about 13,000 items out of landfills," says Bertou through the fundraiser TerraCycle. They are collecting candy wrappers, chip bags, and personal care and beauty items that are then shipped off to TerraCycle.
In honor of Recycle America, beauty product lines that recycle and have recycling programs
America Recycles Day, November 15, is a day that is dedicated to promoting recycling across the country. In
case you missed it, don’t fret. You can still participate in recycling all year around. Many
cosmetics companies are now committed to conserving our resources, increasing efficiency and reducing pollution by offering smart
recycling programs. Join the fight to keep cosmetics packaging out of our landfills. Here are some popular
beauty product lines that recycle.
Garnier
Garnier has teamed up with TerraCycle, a company dedicated to recycling waste, in order to recycle and reuse cosmetics packaging. Consumers can join the
Personal Care and Beauty Brigade to recycle items such as used lipstick tubes, mascara tubes, nail polish bottles, shampoo bottles, conditioner bottles and eyeliner pencils. The material will be reused to create environmentally-friendly playgrounds throughout the United States.
Hudsonville Christian School released the detailed list of waste to be sent to TerraCycle.

My homegirl and Miami blogger Jewel of
Jewel’s Fab Life is hosting the Garnier Greener Tour this Friday from 4pm-6pm in Miami. I’m all kinds of jealous that I can’t attend. It’ll be an epic event for several reasons…
- The beauty pimped out Garnier bus will park its sexy self at a Walmart parking lot. What’s inside the bus? Garnier goodies, cupcakes and information on how we can recycle our cosmetic packaging.
- TerraCycle’s partnership with Garnier means there will be bins on site to encourage you to bring old shampoo, conditioner, and lotion bottles to recycle.
- Hairstylists will be on site in case you’d like to upgrade your locks a bit.
- There will be plenty of games and activities.
- You’ll get to hang out with Jewel!
The event is absolutely free but you do need to
RSVP to confirm your attendance. If you make it – tell Jewel I said “hi!” For more information, check out Jewel’s post
here.
I speak for many of our eco citizens and dedicated environmentalist when I say that it pains me to throw anything away, but unfortunately, there are just some things that just can’t be recycled. Chip bags, candy wrappers, tape dispensers and used pens all have to go into the trash… or normally would…
Thanks to the company TerraCycle, hard-to-recycle items like those listed above are not trashed, but are actually recycled, or even upcycled. TerraCycle partners with the companies that produce these items, and works with them to create an environmentally friendlier end of life- which means that for many of them, they are turned into something completely new-for example, pens and sharpies are turned into dry erase marker holders, and cookie wrappers are turned into backpacks. Awesome, right? Wait- it gets better.
TerraCycle's UpCycling (recycling) Program comes to Franklin County to benefit the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area. The United Way supports non-profit community programs and volunteer efforts across the region; TerraCycle offers a wonderful way to support this organization in its efforts.
Are you tired of your trash piling up? Would you like to be able to recycle more products? TerraCycle's goal is to eliminate the idea of waste by creating collection and solution systems for anything that today must be sent to a landfill. They do this by creating national recycling systems for previously non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste. TerraCycle then converts the collected waste into a wide variety of products and materials. With more than 20 million people collecting waste in over 20 countries TerraCycle has diverted billions of units of waste and used them to create over 1,500 different products available at major retailers ranging from Walmart to Whole Foods Market.
