Der Stiftehersteller BIC schließt sich mit dem Recyclingunternehmen TerraCycle zusammen, um Stiften ein zweites Leben zu schenken. Anstatt wie bisher im Restmüll zu landen, werden die leeren Schreibgeräte recycelt und das Müllvorkommen in Unternehmen reduziert. Wer das größte Recyclingengagement an den Tag legt, kann zudem einen Beamer fürs Büro gewinnen. Durch das Programm können alle Schreibgeräte und Korrekturmittel, egal, ob von BIC^® oder einer anderen Marke, zu neuen nützlichen Produkten wie Stiftehaltern, Mülltonnen oder Gießkannen recycelt werden. Freiwillige "Sammelteams" in Büros haben die Möglichkeit, ihre leeren Stifte zu sammeln und kostenlos einzusenden.

A través del Programa Nacional de Recolección y Reutilización de sobres de bebidas en polvo que Kraft y TerraCycle lanzaron en marzo de 2011, se recolectaron más de 500.000 unidades que serán utilizados como materia prima para la fabricación de nuevos productos amigables con el medio ambiente. Más de 350.000 personas se unieron a la "Brigadas Tang" para recolectar los empaques. Centenares de escuelas, organizaciones y familias de todo el país armaron sus Equipos de recolección y se sumaron a la convocatoria para que estos materiales ya no sean basura y para que TerraCycle pueda darles una nueva vida. Con los sobres recolectados, TerraCycle realiza una gran variedad de productos upcycled que guardan la forma y el material original, como mochilas, cartucheras y billeteras, y productos reciclados como tachos de basura hechos con plástico reciclado. De esta forma, se evita que los desechos lleguen a los rellenos sanitarios produciendo un menor impacto ambiental. Los Programas de Recolección y Reutilización de TerraCycle promueven la cultura del cuidado del medio ambiente en la comunidad y la recuperación de materiales difíciles de reciclar como los sobrecitos. Además, TerraCycle realiza una donación de 10 centavos por cada unidad de desecho recolectada que es donada a la organización sin fines de lucro o escuela que el Equipo participante elija. En 2011, TerraCycle, con el sponsoreo de Tang, donó más de $ 20.000 a distintas instituciones alrededor de todo el país. Tang de Kraft Foods promueve el reciclaje de sus envases y apoya las Brigadas de Recolección de sobrecitos que seguirán vigentes durante todo el 2012. TerraCycle es una compañía que representa a una nueva generación poniendo un especial interés en la triple línea de resultados, comprometidos en lo social y ambiental, sin perder de vista el resultado económico. En 2001, el estudiante universitario Tom Szaky fundó TerraCycle con la esperanza de construir una nueva y más responsable forma de hacer negocios. Every child learns about recycling in school, but Sonja Krawesky’s Grade Three class at St. Patrick’s Catholic School are taking that concept to a whole new level. The class recently took top honours in TerraCycle Canada’s “Design a Box That Rocks” competition, which encourages teams nationwide to design and create an innovative TerraCycle waste collection station in order to “upcycle” over sighted waste materials. The program, only initiated at Saint Patrick’s last fall after hearing about it at the Toronto Homes Show, is wildly successful with the students.

The Queen Elizabeth School’s Knights of the Green Table eco club has once again taken the second runner-up prize in TerraCycle Canada’s recent Winter Trash to Cash waste collection contest, which recognizes the top collectors of TerraCycle’s numerous waste streams from across Canada during a two-month period.

I read an interesting post last weekend, where the blogger had just received a new Tassimo Drink machine. Caite, at A Lovely Shore Breeze, left me a message reminding me that it was at her blog that I read that post.  I mentioned that I use my machine as a hot water source.  A few readers mentioned that they had not considered doing that.  In this post I am going to expand on my comments on that blog.

Let’s face it. We’re not all cloth-diapering mamas. For many of us disposable diapers are the practical choice. But just because you use disposables, doesn’t mean you don’t consider your impact on the environment and try to make greener changes in other ways. But now a partnership with Huggies and TerraCycle–a recycling powerhouse company that thrives on waste, we can do a little bit more to offset those diapers that end up being tossed into landfills. TerraCycle is known for taking things like CapriSun wrappers, Doritos bags, or circuit boards and turning them into reusable products like grocery totes, clocks and outdoor fencing. But as part of a program with Huggies, called the Huggies Brigade, they are collecting the plastic packaging from Huggies Diaper bags and recycling it into other products. This keeps it out of the landfill and re-worked into another purpose.

Waar heeft u geld voor

nodig?

,,Nu voor een bibliotheek in Tanzania

die half af is. We hebben

er al 50.000 euro inzitten en nog

20.000 euro nodig. Op dit moment

gaat veel geld naar hongerfondsen.

Er is immers hongersnood

en wat heb je dan aan een

bibliotheek? In mei kan er weer

worden geoogst op het land en

gaan we verder met de bieb.’’

Alle reden dus om de boer op

te gaan?

,,Inderdaad. Ik ga alle dorpen af

en bezoek scholen, bedrijven en

winkels. Scholen kunnen mij

vragen een Powerpoint-presentatie

te houden over ons project

in Afrika. Mijn doel is minimaal

in ieder dorp een inzamelpunt te

hebben. Een supermarkt is natuurlijk

het meest effectief. De

Albert Heijn in ‘s-Gravendeel en

C1000 in Puttershoek doen al

mee.’’

Wat heeft u tot nu toe gebouwd

in Tanzania?

,,We zijn nu dertien jaar actief

en hebben een kleuterschool,

weeshuis en werkwinkels voor

naaisters, lassers en timmerlui

gebouwd. Ook zijn er nu winkeltjes,

een restaurant, internetcafé,

guesthouse en sinds januari een

middelbare school. Geld hiervoor

hebben we onder andere

verdiend met het inzamelen van

plastic flessen. Sinds afval gescheiden

wordt ingezameld, kan

dat niet meer. Vandaar dat we

nu met pennen beginnen.’’
