Tom Szaky, president and CEO of international recycling company TerraCycle recently gave the keynote address at the 7th annual Responsible Business Summit New York. Szaky addressed how companies are increasingly looking towards sustainable innovations to change environmental, social and governmental risks into workable business opportunities.

“Loop was designed from the ground up to reinvent the way we consume by leveraging the sustainable, circular milkman model of yesterday with the convenience of e-commerce,” Tom Szaky, founder and chief executive of Loop and TerraCycle, said in a news release.
That’s the goal of “Loop,” a durable packaging initiative run by New Jersey-based recycling company TerraCycle that debuted at the World Economic Forum earlier this year. This week, Loop began its U.S. trial, allowing consumers to use steel, glass and durable plastic reusable packaging for everyday items. Kroger Co. and Walgreens, along with such consumer brands as Procter & Gamble, Nestle, The Clorox Co. and Unilever, are taking part.

“Herbal Essences Recycling Program with TerraCycle is one way to help encourage recycling plastic bottles, especially from the bathroom,” said Lynn Hicks, Herbal Essences, North America brand manager. “We want to be sure all our hair care bottles have a way to be recycled and keep plastic out of our landfills and oceans.”
“Cigarette butts don’t break down, that’s why you see them everywhere. Once the receptacle is full, we call TerraCycle and they send us a bag to dump the cigarette butts in. We ship them back to the company and they recycle the filters and compost the tobacco.”
