We also chose markets where we already have strong partnerships with brands and retailers. For example, TerraCycle has been operating in France for almost 10 years, and we had worked with Carrefour. Two years ago, Carrefour was the first retailer to believe in Loop’s model and to support the launch in Paris this year. It was fundamental for us to launch with Carrefour’s support – which is one of the leading retailers in France.

Sustainable priorities usher in new age of pet food packaging

The popularity of pouches is another sticky widget of sorts for this industry. “Wet pet food in a pouch would be more eco-friendly in terms of carbon footprint, but the recyclability portion isn’t there yet for pouches. This is a major concern for the industry,” explains Julian Stauffer, chief operating officer, Packaging Technologies and Inspection (PTI), Tuckahoe, New York. However, Mars Incorporated and global recycling company TerraCycle, Trenton, New Jersey, have made recycling wet pet food pouches possible in the United Kingdom, along with other flexible pet food packaging, through their recycling program.

Let's Talk Trash: Butt out responsibly

One surprising addition to managing cigarette residuals has been TerraCycle’s recycling program for them. The company accepts a variety of materials for free recycling, and in the case of cigarettes, even donates $1 to the non-profit of your choice for every pound collected. Any adult or organization can sign up for free to become a collector, and once a shipment is ready, print out a free shipping label that UPS then picks up. Some municipalities are creating drop-off bins throughout to assist with collection.
