Can You Recycle Wine Corks? Here's How You Can Best Dispose Of Them

The cool thing about corks is that even if you can't recycle them in the traditional sense, there are plenty of ways that you can put them to good use. Companies likeReCork America, the largest cork recycler in North America, take natural corks and turn them into shoes, yoga blocks, and more. You can find cork drop off locationson their site — they've recycled over 100 million so far. TerraCycle, meanwhile, accepts both natural and plastic versions and turns them into products, plus the company will give you rewards for recycling. It's worth looking around, because it may be that a company you already love or support that uses cork has a system to recycle them.

Are You An Empty Nester? Here’s What To Do With Your Kids’ Old Stuff

If your kids have left your shower overrun with their old products, there’s an eco-friendly solution that will make you both happy: recycling them. After you’ve finished up the products, companies like Terracycle will take the packaging and recycle it for you, creating new product packaging out of the recycled material. And even if their particular personal care products aren’t your cup of tea, you can always use extra shampoo to clean your makeup brushes or use leftover conditioner as shaving cream.

Outdoor Brands Are Uniting Against Single-Use Plastic

The hope is that creating awareness around single-use plastic will lead folks to identify and eliminate other single-use waste from their lives—including takeout boxes and disposable cutlery. For instance, Steamboat Springs-based Honey Stinger will provide a water station at their booth and recycle product sample wrappers through the TerraCycle program. The pledge even inspired Patagonia to hire a sustainability auditor for the upcoming show, in order to track the brand’s footprint from booth materials to polybags.

Comox Valley group initiates ‘Hold On To Your Butt’ Campaign

At the end of the season, these groups will collate the numbers and send the cigarette butts to Terracycle, where the plastic component of the filters will be recycled into plastic items such as park benches. The results of the pilot project will be shared with the CVRD as the CVNHE advocates for the purchase and installation of permanent ashtrays starting in those areas closest to the ocean.

Mountain House: Fusilli Pasta with Italian Sausage

Italian in the backcountry? Mountain House has you covered. Their new Fusilli Pasta with Italian Sausage is a hearty home-cooked meal when you need it the most. The entree consists of “spun fusilli pasta in a rustic tomato sauce made with fire-roasted veggies, garlic, basil, and Italian-style sausage”. This has become a go-to for late night dinners in the van after long days on the trail. The best part is that it has a clean ingredients list that would make your grandmother proud. Mountain House is committed to using only real ingredients. If you look at their ingredients list (which is listed clearly for each option on their website) you will never find artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. Just delicious, ready-in-minutes food! One thing we’re stoked for this year is Mountain House’s partnership with TerraCycle, a company that offers free recycling for clean, empty Mountain House pouches.
