Earthborn Holistic Pet Food, a brand of Midwestern Pet Foods, has reached its goal of recycling 1 million pet food bags by Earth Day 2022 and planting one million trees by Arbor Day 2022, company officials reported. Through UPCs for Trees and a partnership with Trees for the Future, Earthborn Holistic plants trees in deforested areas around the world. Customers collect UPCs from empty bags of Earthborn Holistic products and return them to local participating retailers or mail them in to a designated collection site. In return, trees are planted to create forest gardens and help families out of poverty worldwide, officials said. Throughout the month of April, one returned UPC equaled one tree planted.
With its TerraCycle partnership, Earthborn Holistic pet food and treat bags are 100 percent recyclable through the Earthborn ReBorn Program. Consumers drop off empty bags at participating retailers for recycling and upcycling all at company expense. Reaching the 1,000,000 bags recycled milestone is also equal to keeping 103,356 pounds of waste out of the landfill, officials said.
“We’re thrilled to have hit the one millionth milestone. A big thank you goes out to all of our loyal customers and retailers who participate in both of these programs. We couldn’t have achieved this without you. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that we’re making a difference,” said Brandi Kramer, marketing coordinator at Midwestern Pet Foods in Evansville, Ill. “At Midwestern Pet Foods, we love producing nutritious food for pets while simultaneously supporting sustainability.”

Earthborn Holistic achieves Earth Day goals

EVANSVILLE, IND. — On April 29, Earthborn Holistic Pet Food, a brand owned by Midwestern Pet Foods, announced it has reached its sustainability goals of recycling 1 million bags of pet food and planting 1 million trees. The brand originally announced these goals at the beginning of March. To achieve this milestone, Earthborn Holistic partnered with Trees for the Future and created the UPCs for Trees initiative. Through the program, customers collected and returned UPCs from empty Earthborn pet food bags throughout April. For every UPC collected, Earthborn Holistic planted a tree to create forest gardens. According to Earthborn Holistic, the UPC for Trees program collected 1 million UPCs, equaling 1 million planted trees.
Besides creating the UPCs for Trees initiative, Earthborn Holistic has proved its commitment to sustainability in partnering with TerraCycle. With support from TerraCycle, all Earthborn Holistic’s pet food and treat bags are 100% recyclable through its Earthborn ReBorn Program. As part of the program, consumers can drop off empty pet food and treat bags at participating retailers for free recycling and upcycling.
By Earth Day, April 22, Earthborn Holistic reached its goal of recycling 1 million bags, equal to diverting 103,356 lbs of waste from landfills. “We’re thrilled to have hit the one millionth milestone,” said Brandi Kramer, marketing coordinator at Midwestern Pet Foods. “A big thank you goes out to all of our loyal customers and retailers who participate in both of these programs. Wait, I Can Recycle My Pet Food Packaging?

While cans of pet food can usually be recycled, bags are a little trickier. Their hefty material falls somewhere between plastic and metal, leading many pet parents to do the confused shuffle between the trash and recycling bins every time they have an empty one. Unfortunately, these bags belong in the trashcan more often than not. Since most of them are made from a few layers of material (usually some combination of aluminum and plastic), they tend to be too expensive for local recyclers to process.

“Each layer of a multilayer package would have to be separated and recycled individually for maximum recovery. For curbside recycling programs, this is often inefficient and costly,” explains Mary Ellen Dowd, a communications associate at TerraCycle, an innovative waste management company.

TerraCycle has a mission to “eliminate the idea of waste” by creating recycling solutions for previously unrecyclable items; your pooch’s favorite dry food included. By partnering with global leaders, businesses, communities, and individuals, they’ve overcome the financial barriers and managed to give over 527,000 pounds of pet food packaging a second life as park benches, picnic tables, playgrounds, and more.

Here are a few ways to join their programs:

1. Brand-supported recycling

Depending on the type of pet food you buy, you may actually be able to ship your empties to TerraCycle for free. The company has partnered with the following brands on send-in programs. Simply sign up on the brand’s page and you’ll be able to place your clean-and-dried containers in either any box you have laying around or a pre-paid bag that they send to you. Both options come with pre-paid shipping labels. Once you send your packaging back to Terracycle, they’ll be able to break it down to be reused.

2. Drop-off

Dog and cat food companies Earthborn Holistic and Wellness® have synched up with TerraCycle to establish public dropoff points for their packaging. Look at the map on these brand pages to find a drop-off near you. (It’ll likely be a pet food or supply store.)

3. Zero-waste box

If you don’t buy from companies with an established relationship with TerraCycle, you can still send in your empties to be recycled — you’ll just have to pay for it. Once you buy a Pet Food Packaging Zero Waste Box, you can fill it with any clean pet food bag, box, or container you want to recycle. Though these boxes aren’t cheap (the smallest size is $110), you can share the cost with friends, neighbors, or co-workers.

“A great thing with zero-waste boxes is that it doesn’t have to be just an individual collecting,” Dowd notes. Your pet-friendly apartment building, office, or school could all go in on a box together, for example. Once your box is full, bring it to a UPS shipping location and pat yourself on the back for helping your community avoid tons of trash.

When it comes to pet food packaging, “wishcycling” — or throwing it in the recycling bin and hoping for the best — usually isn’t the answer. Instead, look into programs like TerraCycle that take the guesswork out of it and ensure your pet’s dinnertime stays a low-waste affair.

Build a Better Bowl for your Dog with Earthborn Holistic Unrefined

And as you know, we currently have 23 pets! It all started when Cassidy surprised us with a puppy, Athena, when Scarlet was four and Des was one. Last spring, we brought home our puppy, Astro. And we also got Luna, our gorgeous cat, over the summer after we had lost our other one. Through all of this, we currently have 20 chickens as well but they’re outdoor pets. We name, love, and care for every animal in our household. And we want what’s best for them all.

Build a Better Bowl For Your Dog With Earthborn Holistic Unrefined:

The organization thought Astro’s litter might be “Mini-Huskies” – Husky/Pomeranians or some sort of Husky mixes. Soon after we got him, we realized there was nothing Husky about him. Nothing! And not only that, but his body grew longer rather than taller. He looked like a sure Corgi for a while and then changed again. We had some suspicions but ran a DNA test that revealed all sorts of surprises! It turns out that our “Mini Husky” was largely Chihuahua, as well as Pomeranian and Shepherd. What an unlikely combo! No matter what he is, we love him BIG!     As for Athena, she’s another story to tell! True to the stuff of childhood dreams, my husband surprised us with a puppy. Again, we had no idea it was going to happen. He had found her on a rescue site months earlier and kept the secret through the whole adoption and fostering process. Athena came from Alabama. We thought my husband was at work, but he was actually headed to Vermont to meet the rescue transport. We were sick at home and then he came to the front door her little face peeking out of his coat. Seriously a shining moment in life! So, let’s be real. Even the classiest of canines, which I certainly don’t have, are a little unrefined. They’re dogs! They eat off the floor, chase their own tails, and roll in mud. And don’t get me started on porcupines and skunks! All that aside, their quirks are why we love them. Everything they provide far outweighs a little mud and tail-chasing! In fact, I love those things because they mean PLAY and HUMOR! I celebrate my fun and wild dogs by giving them a new dog food product line – UNREFINED. And you’re going to want to hear all about this.

Why we love it:

  • This food is made with fresh, sustainably-sourced proteins, and ancient grains simply harvested from family farms.
  • Did I mention it’s made with freshly picked, nutrient-rich superfoods?
  • UNREFINED is enriched with Taurine, an amino acid that helps to support your dog’s health.
  • And it’s for all life stages – you can feed it to adult dogs and puppies too.
  • Earthborn Holistic is a family-owned company with four kitchens in the US, and has never had a recall. EVER! Do I need to say that twice??
  • Athena has seen a cardiologist so we’re sensitive to her needs. That’s why we love that Earthborn Holistic only uses the good stuff. They don’t use the foods on Athena’s no fly list, like peas, lentils, legumes, chicken, potatoes, by-products, fillers, artificial colors, artificial flavors, and artificial preservatives.
  • They also use innovative sustainability. Their PlantBag® contains up to 40% plant-based plastic, made from Brazilian sugarcane ethanol, and their plant-based plastic has a negative carbon footprint. NEGATIVE.
  • And UNREFINED’s packaging is BPA-free and 100% recyclable through TerraCycle® and the Earthborn ReBorn program. And over 630,000 bags have been recycled and over $40,000 has been donated to pet charities. WHOA.

Sustainable priorities usher in new age of pet food packaging

The popularity of pouches is another sticky widget of sorts for this industry. “Wet pet food in a pouch would be more eco-friendly in terms of carbon footprint, but the recyclability portion isn’t there yet for pouches. This is a major concern for the industry,” explains Julian Stauffer, chief operating officer, Packaging Technologies and Inspection (PTI), Tuckahoe, New York. However, Mars Incorporated and global recycling company TerraCycle, Trenton, New Jersey, have made recycling wet pet food pouches possible in the United Kingdom, along with other flexible pet food packaging, through their recycling program.

3 ways to have an eco-friendly picnic

With the Spring Equinox upon us, making it a point to connect with the natural world is one of the best things we can do for our health and wellness. While people of all ages benefit from face time with the great outdoors (particularly city dwellers who see more concrete than green), children and young people are especially better off. While the average American spends 93% of their time indoors, an alienation with nature, “nature-deficit disorder,” as been associated with higher rates of physical and emotional illness and attention difficulties in children.
