美国的TerraCycle公司（https://www.terracycle.com/）把从卡夫、星巴克、沃尔格林等大公司回收的垃圾中的果汁盒变成铅笔盒子；将牙刷弯成手镯、钱包带或牙刷架；将糖纸制作成美丽的风筝。 TerraCycle收集人们邮寄给他们的废弃卷烟，通过它们的卷烟废弃团队，把过滤嘴加工为工业产品，如运输托盘和塑料木材（不同的产业链）。

  家庭消耗量少，可以拆散單莢後，在住家區分類回收。星巴克單莢的塑料杯是5號回收材質，一般回收中心都可以處理，但是要清得沒有鋁箔的痕跡才行，否則會被當作垃圾；小圓碟怎麼辦？筆者已去電信向星巴克討教，但是還沒有收到回音。鋁箔蓋那部分算金屬，能否回收，需要參考居住的城市的規定。克里格的單莢沒有小圓碟，它的塑料杯一般是7號材質，許多城鎮都不能作回收，只有專業的回收廠，像「大地循環」（TerraCycle）能處理。

Duurzame ondernemer Tom Szaky (29) heeft van het inzamelen van klein afval een miljoenenbedrijf gemaakt. De Amerikaan richt zijn pijlen nu op Nederland. Dinsdag sprak hij met de marketingmensen van Douwe Egberts over het inzamelen van gebruikte coffeecups van de koffieproducent die nu na gebruik bij het huisafval terecht komen. Wat de bestemming zal zijn voor de cups, blijft nog koffiedik kijken. Wolfram Schnelle, hoofd van het Europese businessdevelopmentteam van TerraCycle. "We kunnen er nog niets inhoudelijks over zeggen." Szaky, een Princeton-drop out die van het inzamelen van oude pakjes drinken en sigarettenpeuken een miljoenenbedrijf heeft gemaakt, was voor een dag in Nederland om er klanten binnen te halen voor zijn duurzame afvalverwerkingsconcept. Het bedrijf richt zich op het inzamelen van afval voor bedrijven dat nu nog in de verbrandingsoven verdwijnt of op een afvalberg. Het claimt bijvoorbeeld in Zweden al zes procent en in Groot-Brittannië twee van alle verbruikte coffeecups een tweede leven te geven. Als onderdeel van zijn aanvalsplan voor Nederland heeft hij recent een distributiecentrum in Amsterdam geopend. Ook is hij gestart met het inzamelen van BIC-pennen, die hij onder meer omtovert tot afvalbakken en gieters. Szaky: "We kijken nu naar nog meer producten. Mogelijk openen we hier in de toekomst zelfs een kantoor." Europa veroveren TerraCycle, dat in 2009 in London zijn eerste Europese vestiging opende, is momenteel hard bezig om de Europese markt te veroveren met zijn alternatieve reclyclingfilosofie. Vandaag is de oprichter in Spanje, om de komende dagen nog andere landen aan te doen. Hij spreekt er met multinationals om ze binnen te halen als sponsoren. In de Verenigde Staten is hij er al in geslaagd om een hele serie grote merken, zoals Coca Cola, Kraft, Johnson & Johnson en Starbucks, zover te krijgen dat ze zijn inzamelingsacties financieren. In 2010 heeft hij voor 12 miljoen dollar aan sponsoring binnengesleept. Szaky: “Het levert bedrijven positieve pr op.” Sara Lee, eigenaar van Douwe Egberts, heeft vorig jaar de aanval geopend op de bekende coffeecups van Nespresso en verkoopt de namaak Nespresso-cups inmiddels in meerdere landen. In 2001 bracht Douwe Egberts samen met Philips de bekende Senseo op de markt, waarvan er al vele miljoenen zijn verkocht. De pads en ook de coffeecups hebben een verandering teweeggebracht in de manier van koffiedrinken, maar leveren ook extra huisvuil op. Szaky: "Dit soort afval valt buiten de bestaande recyclingketen." Teenslippers De ondernemer heeft in enkele jaren een slimme logistieke keten opgezet. Hij zamelt afval in en verwerkt dat tot ofwel nieuwe producten (upcycling) of tot plastic basismateriaal. Producten waar hij in Amerika onder meer bekend mee is geworden zijn de Lays-chipszakken omgetoverd tot handtassen en rugzakken gemaakt van Capri Sun-drinkpakjes. Ook heeft hij in de Verenigde Staten al hele basketbalveldjes weten aan te leggen waarin teenslippers zijn verwerkt. Szaky: "We hebben een team van wetenschappers dat voor iedere afvalstroom een product kan bedenken." De ondernemer -- in 2006 noemde ondernemersblad Inc. hem een van de coolste startups in de VS-  heeft een opmerkelijke weg afgelegd. In 1987 emigreerde hij met zijn ouders vanuit Hongarije, via een tussenstop van een jaar in Rotterdam, naar de Verenigde Staten. Tijdens zijn studie psychologie en economie aan het gerenomeerde Princeton in New Jersey deed hij mee aan een businessplanwedstrijd. Hij had het plan opgevat om er met lokale afvalverwerkers te gaan concurreren. Hij maakte gebruik van maden om het voedsel uit de kantine op te laten eten. Daaruit ontwikkelde hij vervolgens weer een kunstmestproduct voor tuinplanten, want “vrienden ontdekten dat hun weetplanten er sneller door gingen groeien.” Om die kunstmest ergens in kwijt te kunnen, begon hij met inzamelen van gebruikte flessen. Toen hij er ook nog in slaagde om zich bij retailgiganten als Wal-Mart en Home Depot binnen te praten, nam zijn bedrijf een grote vlucht. Meer weten over het opmerkelijke verhaal van Tom Szaky? … unique “green” start up company. TerraCycle’s purpose is to eliminate the idea of waste. Because… if you think about it.. in nature waste does not exist.  Those are humans who have created non-recyclable waste. Non-recyclable for nature but recyclable for TerraCycle! TerraCycle –hereafter TC. How does it work? Basically TC creates waste collection programs, “brigades,” for all kinds of typically non-recyclable waste and turn the collected waste into new products, ranging from recycled park benches or garbage bins to upcycled backpacks, pencil holders or jewelry. Recycled means the waste is reformed into new material but upcycled means that the waste material is reused.

The Fourth of July celebrations will be in full swing this weekend. As you plan your party, think about what you will do with all the trash that is leftover. TerraCycle works with large companies such as Frito-Lay, Nabisco, and Starbucks to “eliminate the idea of waste”. The waste generated by these companies is collected by schools, church groups, and other organizations as well as indivduals. The “trash”, shipped free of charge, is then turned into backpacks, speakers, pencil cases and more which feature the brightly colored packaging. Other items are used to make pictures frames, floor tiles and plastic lumber.
