The Grass Can Be Greener Where You Least Expect It: Green Education for All Ages

Though the tactics for reaching the audiences often needs to be different, it’s still most effective and efficient – you reach the mostpeople – when you combine audiences and catch everyone at once. The hard part, of course, is finding this middle ground. What will inspire and impact children and adults alike, without confusing one group or boring the other. At TerraCycle, we’ve found that one of the best ways to do this is to put green lessons where they’re least expected. For us, this means retailers and playgrounds. By placing bins in stores like Old Navy and by partnering with stores such as Target and Walmart, which cater to both adults and children, we can catch the attention of both groups. Many people don’t expect to see backpacks made from Capri Sun drink pouches on the shelves – drink pouches belong in the food section! These items often get an equal gasp from parents and children alike, albeit for likely differing reasons.

PDPlay Partners With TerraCycle On Old Navy National Playground Project

PDPlay, the leading designer and manufacturer of environmentally friendly commercial playground equipment for parks, schools, child development centers, communities and the military, announced earlier this month a partnership with TerraCycle, Inc, the pioneer upcycling and recycling company and Old Navy to design, manufacture and install four new playgrounds for the 2011-2012 school year. The playgrounds, donated by Old Navy and TerraCycle, are made from used flip flops collected from Old Navy customers earlier this year during a month-long “Flip Flop Replay” collection drive. The donation recipients are schools in Austin, TX, San Jose, CA, Poughkeepsie, NY, and a fourth that is yet to be selected.

Trash Tycoon creator Guerillapps provides tips, tricks and insights

Look, recycling and resource management have always been snore-inducing topics. But those very issues have the world in quite a scary predicament right now, and New York City-based social game maker Guerillapps looks to change that with Trash Tycoon. Since our first look at the game, we recently sat down with the new developer's CEO Raviv Turner and community manager Chris Dugan to learn more about Trash Tycoon and get some pointers on how to make the most of the eco-friendly game. Turner tells us that the developer has over 90 days worth of content planned, and later joint team features that make liberal use of its support from TerraCycle will be implemented. Guerillapps is working with its strategic partners like Terracycle and Carbon Fund to help its players hopefully make a tangible difference in the environment. While players can only donate to the cause directly with Facebook Credits now, Guerillapps is working with Carbon Fund so its commercial partners will allow the company to donate to the cause through virtual goods bought even without Facebook Credits.

“People are missing out on valuable resources because they’re overlooking what in front of them and writing it off because that’s the old habit.” Tom Szaky Terra Cycle, Inc. CEO MO.com is proud to partner with The Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC): The Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) is an invite-only nonprofit organization comprised of the country’s most promising young entrepreneurs. The Y.E.C promotes entrepreneurship as a solution to youth unemployment and underemployment and provides its members with access to tools, mentorship, and resources that support each stage of a business’s development and growth. TerraCycle, Inc. is an international upcycling company that takes difficult to recycle packaging and turns it into affordable, eco-friendly products. Tom Szaky, CEO of TerraCycle, founded it in 2001. TerraCycle is the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable post-consumer waste. TerraCycle works with over 30 major brands in the U.S. (and in a growing number of other countries) to collect used packaging and products (Frito-Lay chip bags, Mars candy wrappers, Capri Sun and Honest Kids juice pouches, pens, toothbrushes, etc.) that would otherwise be destined for landfills. TerraCycle repurposes that waste into new eco-friendly materials and products that are available online and through major retailers. The waste is collected through TerraCycle’s Brigade programs, which are free fundraisers that pay schools and non-profits for every piece of waste they collect and return.

Terracycle Founder Tom Szaky Interview

Terracycle is one of my favorite companies of all times and Tom Szaky is another living proof that one person can make a huge impact in the world, Terracycle has deviated over 2 billion units of trash from going to landfills, it has donated over $2 million dollars to schools and it has over 23 million people collecting trash! Here's an inspiring interview with Tom, a popular blogger at Treehugger and the face of the National Geographic show Garbage Moguls. What did you want to be when you were a kid? I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. When I was 14, I started a web site design company called Flyte Design, and my interest in entrepreneurship continued to grow from there.

Campus Org Success Through Recycling With Terracycle

Ohio Wesleyan is home to over one hundred student organizations, many of which participate in philanthropy -related programs.  While traditional methods can still be effective, students may find themselves becoming bored by the stream of fundraisers and Greek-organized events.  Knowing it is still important to support a cause and be involved in community service, organizations may have trouble searching for a way to make a difference that is out-of-the-box but still not too time consuming. Terracycle offers a solution to both of these problems.  Terracycle offers recycling programs for 44 types of atypical materials.  Amount of materials sent in is recorded through use of a point system; certain types of materials are worth more points than others, but almost all materials can contribute to gaining some amount of points.  After accruing a certain amount of points, they can be redeemed for items ranging from circuit board coasters to recycled plastic benches.  A program designed to target recycling cookie wrappers could redeem points for tote bags made from cookie wrappers to further advertise their initiative.  Possibly the best way to help a cause is to donate the points through one of Terracycle’s charity partners.  Points can be redeemed to provide people with clean water, to adopt land, to donate to organizations such as Heifer International and Red Cross, and many more.
