Lipscomb University and Lipscomb Academy elementary school are hosting two household waste collections — one from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Lipscomb Academy campus at 4517 Granny White Pike, and one from9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lipscomb Academy football field at Lealand and Caldwell lanes. In addition to the household items, they will accept quirky, hard-to-recycle items such as potato chip bags, candy wrappers, drink pouches, ink pens, dried-up markers and more to redeem through the Terracycle Brigade. The collection days also will accept aluminum cans, plastic bottles and newspapers.

Cairn University Enactus is hosting a community e-waste collection drive with TerraCycle Inc. on Nov. 22. Drop off cellphones, iPods, MP3 players, laptops, notebooks, netbooks, tablets, iPads, ereaders, digital cameras and camcorders, GPS units, and graphing calculators between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The collection will be at the university, 200 Manor Avenue.
Countryside Elementary School took second place in the Colgate and ShopRite Recycled Playground Challenge. In the challenge, participating schools earned credits for sending in items such as toothpaste tubes and floss containers to TerraCycle, a company repurposing products that are difficult to recycle. Countryside earned 500 tote bags, pencil cases, pens and a gift certificate of $750 to ShopRite for their hard work.
Efforts to recycle packaging from student lunches have earned Warm Springs Intermediate School recognition by the TerraCycle recycling company. The company says the school is one of West Virginia's top recyclers of lunch kits—a pre-packaged meal that some students bring from home.
An old tooth-brush doesn't necessarily evoke a feeling of possibility, but perhaps it should. A contest held by Colgate-Palmolive — in collaboration with ShopRite and recycling company TerraCycle — showed students that old oral care products could be made into something new.
