Your pump of face wash runs dry: What do you do? If you're like most people, you either toss the bottle in the trash with a twinge of guilt or put it in your recycling bin and hope for the best—you're not sure it's recyclable and suspect it might get sorted out and sent to a landfill anyway. Earth Day has us once again re-evaluating our own efforts to preserve the planet, we decided to finally figure out how to ensure that the dozens of product packages we go through each year don't end up languishing in a landfill for all eternity. Here's a new action plan for recycling beauty-product waste that's totally doable.
If you don’t like the taste of tap water, grab a water filtration product for your home. Brita and PUR are two great brands to choose from, and you can even recycle their filtration products by sending them into my company,
TerraCycle. By collecting and sending us your
PUR or
Brita dispensers, pitchers, faucet mounts, and other filtration products, you can even earn money for a local school or charity of your choosing.
The collected challenge materials will be recycled through TerraCycle, an organization focusing on non-traditional recycling. “We hope everyone in our community will get excited about this,” she said. “It’s an easy and effective way to keep material out of landfills and put them in line to be recycled and reused. It’s not a far-out concept and the whole community can get behind it.”
One of my favorite discoveries in this fascinating world of green innovation is the company
Terracycle. Simply put, founder and Princeton-dropout
Tom Szaky recycles the unrecyclable. You can participate by signing up for different recycling collection programs, collecting your waste, and then shipping it back to Terracycle.
The Sea Otter Foundation and Trust, a nonprofit based in Westminster, is dedicated to recycling. Established in 2013, the organization raises funds for sea otter researchers, biologists and conservation initiatives while raising awareness in Colorado. This summer, the foundation won an award from TerraCycle for recycling efforts, specifically in the beauty care items category. To get involved, visit
