ELIMINATING THE IDEA OF WASTE®

Children with disabilities benefit from recycling campaign in Mérida

More than one million bags of snacks were collected by the community and raised $ 80,597.50 pesos

The integral teaching center “Enseñando a caminar por la vida A.C.” (ENCAVI) located in the city of Merida, specializes in teaching children with disabilities to perform in various daily activities, which are performed in a healthy, safe environment And improving the quality of life of the beneficiaries. In addition, it teaches them values as important as care for the environment.

For some years, the ENCAVI, committed to the environment, has decided to carry out campaigns and agreements with the parents to collect the snack bags that were consumed.

The Integral development center with the help of TerraCycle Mexico and its idea of eliminating waste through its snack bag recycling program led a series of campaigns and agreements in support of parents.

The commitment was present both in the administrative and in the parents, as the result of these actions was reflected in the 1,611,950 bags of snack that were collected until December last year. The garbage was collected in a warehouse where it was stored, emplayaba and sent to be recycled by TerraCycle who receives the garbage delivering points for it.

The garbage collection of the last 6 months collected enough points to raise the sum of $ 80,597.50, which will be used to improve the facilities and purchase material for use by the beneficiaries.

While positive results have been achieved for vulnerable groups and the planet in the harvesting campaigns, more people need to be involved in these programs to promote recycling and environmental care, as well as helping many others who lack the economic resources to purchase basic goods for their quality of life, for this there are also more recycling programs such as oral care products, soaps, cookies bags, bread wraps and sweet bread, these programs are completely free for those interested in collecting their trash and benefit different nonprofit associations.

About TerraCycle: The purpose of TerraCycle is to Eliminate the Idea of Waste®. We do this by creating a national recycling system for wastes previously considered “non-recyclable” or “difficult to recycle”.

Anyone can sign up for these programs, called Brigades, and start sending their waste. For each package collected, TerraCycle provides a cumulative economic incentive, which is donated to non-profit organizations. To participate simply log on to www.terracycle.com.mx or call 01 800 681 1589

Willingboro elementary school earns recycled playground

WILLINGBORO – A recycled playground is on the way this spring for Hawthorne Park Elementary School.   The school earned the playground, which has an approximate retail value of $50,000 and will be recycled from oral care waste, through the 2016 “Recycled Playground Challenge,” courtesy of Colgate-Palmolive, Shop Rite and recycling company TerraCycle.   The Recycled Playground Challenge included hundreds of schools throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut and Maryland, which participated in the Colgate Oral Care Recycling Program, a free recycling program operated by Colgate and TerraCycle.   Hawthorne Park earned a total of 44,188 playground credits by recycling oral care waste and through online voting. While Catherine Doyle Elementary in Wood Ridge finished first in the contest with 48,355 credits, since that school was unable to accept the playground, it goes to the next finisher, which was Hawthorne Park.   The schools earn one “playground credit” for each unit of empty toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, and floss containers sent to TerraCycle for recycling by students and teachers and one credit for every online vote cast for the school. A school or day care must be registered in the Colgate Oral Care Recycling Program in order to participate in the contest.   The Colgate Oral Care Recycling Program is an “ongoing activity, open to any individual, family, school or community group.”     Trenton-based TerraCycle, Inc. was founded in 2001. Its website calls it the “world’s leader” in the collection and repurposing of hard-to-recycle post-consumer waste, ranging from used chip bags to coffee capsules and even cigarette butts.

A Brewing Problem

Every morning ends only two ways.
One
I am calm, and cool. I stride into the kitchen, throw a cup under my Tassimo, insert my favourite espresso disc and then proceed to line up two kids with yogurt cups at the kitchen table. The smell of brewing coffee fills the air, perking me back to the awake zone. I sit around my kitchen table, watch the sun rise over the tree line at the front of my property. I have time to think about all the little changes in my kids in the last few weeks. I take in their sleepy eyes, mussed hair and  adorable chirpy little questions as I sip and ponder the day ahead, planning adventures.
Two
I am a hurricane of chaos. I am feeling behind and already hot and sweaty. One child is insisting on not wearing the outfit I laid out the night before. The other is screaming at the top of their lungs in another room, and I’m not sure why. (I hope there’s no blood). I am trying to get out the door for work in the next 2 minutes, and I know if I don’t, I won’t have enough time to scrape the frost off my windshield. I run into the kitchen, grab an apple and shove my feet into boots as fast as possible. I’ll arrive at work about 25 minutes later, greet coworkers and throw a cup under the Keurig, hoping the box of French Vanilla they keep there is fully stocked. I’ll throw in entirely too much cream and sugar cubes in my branded cup. While my computer boots up, I will inhale the coffee bouquet and shift my mind on to this day’s tasks.
My days, although completely different, end up with me with a cup in my hand. Coffee is my constant companion.
There’s one thing that is bothering me about it though, and it’s not the caffeine. The K-Cups & T-Discs, although incredibly convenient, have a huge environmental impact. Even if I only drink 1 cup a day, that means I’m generating 365 pods this year that are garbage. Last year, Keurig produced enough plastic coffee pods to circle the earth more than 10 times, according to one analyst’s estimate. That’s a lot, and that’s just Keurig.

GoJava has an innovative service that is serving Toronto, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Markham, Thornhill, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan. You place  your order, and then use a GoJava Recycling Bin for your cups. GoJava will come right to your office and recycle them, through a partnership with TerraCycle Canada.
Once they have a pallet of used pods, TerraCycle Canada transports it to a special processor who is able to grind down the pods and separate them into their components (e.g. coffee and plastic). The coffee is then used for compost, while the plastic is made into plastic lumber and used in applications such as flooring, park benches and playgrounds!
The only question I’m left with is – when are you expanding to serve more of Ontario & Canada!
Try It for Yourself!
GoJava is giving away a $100 GoJava giftcard for you to try their coffee and recycling program. You must be located in Toronto, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Thornhill, Markham, Richmond Hill or Vaughan to be eligible to win as GoJava delivers in those areas.
