TerraCycle offers support for stores that sign up for snack bag, candy wrapper recycling.

TRENTON, N.J. -- In an effort to divert more waste from landfills and help businesses engage in their local community, TerraCycle Inc., the leading upcycler and recycler of difficult-to-recycle waste, is encouraging supermarkets and convenience stores to sign up to recycle empty chip bags, candy wrappers and other packaging that accumulates on a daily basis. Each year, millions of these wrappers and bags are needlessly discarded and end up in landfills. The stores can join several programs to collect previously nonrecyclable items and give their customers a way to recycle and earn extra funding for a local charity.
TerraCycle collects more than 40 kinds of products and packaging.

Terracycle wil maar één ding: wereldwijde afvalvermindering. Na hun grote penneninzamelingsacties gaan ze dit jaar nu ook over op sigarettenrecyling.
Het gaat om de sigarettenfilters die na het roken overblijven en normaal gesproken in de prullenbak of op straat belanden. Het plan is om er milieuvriendelijke producten van te maken.
De recyclingsorganisatie kreeg het eind vorig jaar nogal voor haar kiezen toen zij besloot in zee te gaan met een sigarettenbedrijf. Het zou volgens critici niet moreel zijn wanneer je je bezig houdt met een betere wereld.
Afvalexperts
Alleen al langs de snelweg in de Amerikaanse staat Texas liggen 400 miljoen sigarettenfilters. Reden voor Terracycleoprichter Tom Szaky om daar iets aan te doen. “Wij zijn afvalexperts, geen gezondheidsdeskundigen”, schrijft hij in een verklaring. “We verzamelen verschillende soorten afval, zoals chips en snoeppapiertjes, maar nu ook sigarettenstompjes. Dit is troep die anders op straat blijft liggen.”
Terracycle heeft daarnaast flink wat ambitie. De queeste eindigt niet bij sigaretten. “We willen een oplossing voor al het afval op de wereld. Ook al is Terracycle niet verantwoordelijk voor de wereldwijde consumptie, we zoeken wel naar innovatieve manieren om de rommel ervan op te ruimen.”
Persoonlijk ben ik erg benieuwd wat Terracycle gaat maken van de sigarettenfilters en hoe ze het in de Benelux gaan aanpakken!

A Coppertone lançou um programa de coleta de embalagens de protetores solares vazias, de qualquer tamanho ou marca. O material coletado será usado como matéria-prima, substituindo o material virgem e evitando a extração de novos materiais. A estimativa é que são usadas anualmente cerca de 16 milhões de embalagens de protetor solar.
A Brigada Coppertone Protetores do Planeta é feita em parceria com a TerraCycle, empresa que desenvolve produtos eco-amigáveis a partir da reutilização de diversos materiais.
