It’s a fact of life, when the weather warms up, people start heading outside. At TerraCycle, we usually focus on reusing inside the home, but now’s the time to look at outdoor reuse. What can we do to make our patios and yards more eco-friendly?
I talked to our Chief Design Junkie, Tiffany Threadgould, who gave me a few ideas on outdoor reusing. Tiffany explained, “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to give your outdoor space a makeover. Look around you for materials you already have. Fun planters can be made from unexpected objects, like unused buckets, plastic dishware, or even yogurt containers. Just drill a hole in the bottom of each for drainage.”
In the nail-biting final hours before the first guests were scheduled to arrive, the young women who had organized
last year's "Girls Night Out" event sat on the stage facing out toward the product of weeks of trial-by-fire hard work and planning.
"It was just like, 'Oh my gosh, we did this,'" remembers Abby Shulman, now 14. "We didn't know we could do it by ourselves. It felt really good."
Now, the organizers of Girls Night Out — Kaela Wong, Valerie Kologrivov, Alexa Brewster, Kelly McCauley and Abby Shulman — and a group of dedicated and creative middle schoolers have expanded that project into MAD4kids.
MAD4kids will be holding a fundraiser for
Girl Up and
Invisible Children on April 26, which will have an ad book and include vendors, a raffle, and much more, according to seventh grader Kim Caccamo.

Do you have a sustainability officer yet? You might need one. It’s probably even more likely that your customers will have one, and you will have to pay attention to them if you want to continue to supply them with plastic parts or products.
TRENTON, N.J., January 5, 2012 – In an effort to divert more waste from landfills and help businesses engage local communities, recycling and upcycling pioneer TerraCycle is encouraging dental offices to sign up for the Oral Care Brigade, a free recycling program for oral care products, by offering free local marketing campaigns to offices that sign up. By joining the Brigade and collecting previously non-recyclable toothbrushes, tooth paste tubes, tooth paste caps and floss containers , dental offices can offer their existing customers and the local community an easy way to earn extra funding for local schools or charities, while also creating free marketing and consumer engagement opportunities.
I'm sad to say that I developed an unkeen, ungreen habit in 2011. Sometime after my son's first birthday, he went from eating almost everything served to him to being the type of kid who would prefer to exist off yogurt, mac and cheese, and crackers. Sigh.
Frustrated, I'd wander the supermarket aisles trying to think of what I could possibly feed my picky son.
Happy 2012! Today's the first TerraCycle Tuesday of the New Year. Today we'll focus on the Candy Wrapper Brigade.
