CPG companies promote conversion of packaging waste into useful products

Maple Leaf’s Schneiders® Lunchmate® kits packagingMaple Leaf Foods, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Garnier, a subsidiary of L’Oreal, USA, New York, NY, collaborate with Toronto-based TerraCycle Canada and TerraCycle headquarters, Trenton, NJ, respectively, to recycle packaging waste. The upcycler collects packaging from consumers who buy Maple Leaf’s Schneiders® Lunchmate® kits or Garnier beauty-care products. “By partnering with TerraCycle, we’re able to turn used Lunchmate kits into great new products and divert waste from landfills,” explains Kate Beresford, director, marketing, Maple Leaf Foods. “To support everyone who joins our mission, the Schneiders® Lunchmate® Brigade will donate two cents to a school or nonprofit organization of the participant’s choice for each package that’s returned.” Schneiders® Lunchmate® Brigade participants simply sign up at www.terracycle.ca to join and then fill any box with used Lunchmate kit packaging. When the box is full, the participant logs into his/her account, prints a prepaid UPS shipping label and sends the box to TerraCycle at no cost. TerraCycle records the amount collected and sends earned donations to the specified recipients twice a year. The packaging waste is repurposed into new materials and products, which TerraCycle sells online.

MLK CHILDREN’S CENTER STUDENTS COLLECTED ITEMS FOR TERRACYCLE

Earth Day Every Day and MLK Children's Center--- Martin Luther King Children’s Center, a school district before and after school program on the campus of MLK K-8 Elementary School, collects a variety of items for recycling with TerraCycle.  The Children’s Center collected drink pouches, used toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes, empty beauty bottles, cheese wrappers along with dairy tub containers and sends them postage paid to TerraCycle.  MLK Children’s Center earns about $.02 per item. TerraCycle then converts the collected waste into a wide variety of products and materials. TerraCycle’s purpose is to eliminate the idea of waste. Founded in 2001 by Tom Szaky, then a 20-year-old Princeton University freshman, TerraCyle began by producing organic fertilizer, packaging liquid worm poop in used soda bottles. Since then Terracycle has grown into one of the fastest growing green companies in the world. Terracycle is creating national recycling systems for previously non-recyclable waste.  MLK Children’s Center is just one group of 20 million people collecting waste in over 20 countries. TerraCycle has diverted billions of units of waste and used them to create over 1,500 different products available at major retailers ranging from Walmart to Whole Foods Market.  The goal is to eliminate the idea of waste by creating collection and solution systems for anything that today must be sent to a landfill. So far, MLK Children’s Center has sent in 18,146 drink pouches alone. Staff, students and families collect these items from their homes along with collection tubs in the school cafeteria at lunchtime. It’s a great way we celebrate Earth Day everyday! Good for the environment, community and especially the children. Here are some accolades from the students: “Terracycle is cool because we help the environment by recycling our trash.” — Leiomi Gastinell, sixth grader “It’s so easy to save and bring in the items.” — Alyson Eystad, fourth grader “It’s a good way to help the environment and the children’s center without doing anything hard or extreme.” — Elise Ledesma, sixth grader

Garnier, TerraCycle & GrowNYC Team-up to Build Green Garden from Non-Recyclable Beauty Plastic Waste

On June 14, hundreds of L’Oreal USA employees will participate in a major restoration project designed to rebuild a local New York community garden, which was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Located at 237 East 104th Street, the Union Settlement Association is East Harlem’s oldest and largest social service agency, servicing 10,000 city residents including senior citizens, preschoolers and community members. When the restoration project is complete, the garden will be turned over to Union Settlement community members and GrowNYC who will grow and maintain food, flowers, and herbs in dozens of newly-installed garden beds made out of recycled beauty materials. The garden is estimated to yield 1,500 pounds of vegetables a year. Garnier spokesperson Bridget Moynahan will be present for the ground-breaking ceremony and activities, as well as representatives from Garnier, L’Oreal USA, TerraCycle, an international upcycling/recycling company that takes difficult-to-recycle packaging and turns it into innovative new products, and GrowNYC, a hands-on non-profit that provides environmental solutions throughout New York. The beauty waste to be used in Garnier’s Green Garden was collected by Garnier’s Personal Care and Beauty Brigade Program, a free fundraising effort that pays for every piece of waste collected and returned to TerraCycle. The collected beauty waste, which would otherwise be destined for landfills, consists of non-recyclable haircare, skincare and cosmetic packaging. These products have since been recycled by TerraCycle to create many of the plastic components being installed in the new garden. “We are delighted that Garnier is furthering its commitment to beautifying the planet and local communities with the Garnier Green Garden,” said Tom Szaky, TerraCycle CEO. “Not only does Garnier support schools and community organizations on an on-going basis through the Personal Care and Beauty Brigade, the garden will be a permanent testament to the impact recycling can have on a community and in our world.”

10 Green Beauty Essentials inspired by Earth Month

As consumers we make a choice with every purchase. Not to sound preachy, but we should be aware of where we spend our hard earned dollars. And thankfully, for those who are spending wisely, it actually seems to be working! As more and more green brands enter the spotlight, it seems that more and more environmentally friendly brands are available to us. And with our demand, big business is taking notice as well.
