Park Slopers are putting your butts to work — to save the planet! Honchos of the nabe’s Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District installed special receptacles along the thoroughfare where puffing passersby can toss used cigarettes, which are then sent to a company that recycles the otherwise forgotten filth into functional goods, according to a street cleaner that works with the organization.

All the waste collected will be reused, upcycled and recycled into bags, art pieces, park benches or even school desks. Each year, across 21 countries, TerraCycle collects and repurposes billions of pieces of waste, donating millions of dollars to schools and charities in the process.

Contact lenses revolutionized the world of vision care back in 1971 when the first mass-produced soft lenses were introduced by Bausch + Lomb, adding an extra bit of convenience for those in need of vision correction. However, even though the materials they are made with are generally composed of recyclable plastic and/or foil, they are too small for most standard recycling centers. Today, Bausch + Lomb is looking to change that with their  ONE by ONE recycling program, which gives consumers a quick and easy way to recycle their contact lenses, blister packs, and foil, free of charge. We spoke with Gina Wesley, O.D., an optometrist from Complete Eye Care in Minnesota and a proponent of the program, about the initiative and what it means for the future of sustainable eye care.

Did you know that November 15th is America Recycles Day - a national initiative to keep America beautiful? Our library is proud to do its part and you can too by recycling paper, plastic, cardboard, glass, foil and metal. Just drop your clean recyclables into one of the bins throughout the library; these are located near the exits in Brody Learning Commons (BLC) and Milton S. Eisenhower Library (MSEL) and near stairwells. Paper and cardboard go into blue bins, while all other recyclables go in green bins.
