Like sustainability advocates everywhere, I was excited in January to learn that
TerraCycle was
working with two dozen of the world’s largest brands to launch
Loop, a "circular economy" e-commerce website.
Loop delivers products in reusable containers from brands that consumers already know and love. They magically appear on front doorsteps on an as-needed basis.
Some people may wonder what happens to the Brita filters and pitchers when their life cycle has expired. The company works with TerraCycle so that the filters and pitchers can be recycled into items like cutting boards, toothbrushes, and cups. Consumers can drop off their used filters at London Drugs locations in the western provinces, or mail them back (a minimum of three) to Brita for upcycling.
We also chose markets where we already have strong partnerships with brands and retailers. For example, TerraCycle has been operating in France for almost 10 years, and we had worked with Carrefour. Two years ago, Carrefour was the first retailer to believe in Loop’s model and to support the launch in Paris this year. It was fundamental for us to launch with Carrefour’s support – which is one of the leading retailers in France.
The popularity of pouches is another sticky widget of sorts for this industry. “Wet pet food in a pouch would be more eco-friendly in terms of carbon footprint, but the recyclability portion isn’t there yet for pouches. This is a major concern for the industry,” explains Julian Stauffer, chief operating officer, Packaging Technologies and Inspection (PTI), Tuckahoe, New York. However, Mars Incorporated and global recycling company TerraCycle, Trenton, New Jersey, have made recycling wet pet food pouches possible in the United Kingdom, along with other flexible pet food packaging, through their recycling program.
Matthew Sharon, 10, a student at John H. West Elementary School in the Plainedge school district, gathered with his classmates teachers and staff, Tuesday, June 11, 2019, to celebrate their new playground made entirely out of recycled dental products. The school won the Colgate & ShopRite Recycled playground challenge, by collecting the most dental products. Students and district officials were joined by representatives from Colgate-Palmolive, ShopRite and TerraCycle, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony commemorating the unique playground.
Earlier this spring, the Mississauga, Ont.-based company teamed up with acclaimed international recycling leader TerraCycle, Inc. to create a free cross-country recycling program Canada for Henkel’s bestselling Sunlight and Purex brands of plastic detergent pouches.
Seed Phytonutrients is a clean beauty brand you need to keep on your radar, especially now that it’s officially available at
Ulta Beauty. The brand offers everything from face masks and cream to hair and body (and everything in between). But something that makes this brand extra unique is its product packaging. Their shower-friendly paper bottles are made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper with a post-consumer recycled bottle. Each product contains a packet of seeds inside of the packaging for you to get your green thumb on. Plus, they’ve partnered with recycling company
TerraCycle to make recycling easy and free!
Saehong Ahn, president of Amorepacific Corporation said, "Plastic issue is now a common social problem which companies should also take part in. Amorepacific will prepare for the age of 'No Plastic' by reusing collected empty bottles and developing environmentally friendly materials. Through positive cooperation with TerraCycle, we will make the Earth beautiful with our contribution to responsible consumption and production."
The containers, produced as part of recycling company TerraCycle’s Loop initiative, will at first only be available to customers shopping online. Loblaws will also pick them up and clean them once customers are done. While there’s no set date for the in-store launch, it’s expected to be later in 2020.
