Terracycle is a company that collects previously non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste and converts it into new products, ranging from recycled park benches to upcycled backpacks.
They do this by creating waste collection programs, which are referred to as “Brigades”, for each particular waste item. The LIU Post Recycling Program is currently a member of 9 Brigades.
These Brigades include:
-Drink Pouch Brigade: Accepted waste includes aluminum drink pouches and plastic drink pouches such as Capri Sun, Kool-Aid Jammers, and Honest Kids.
-Candy Wrapper Brigade: Acceptable waste includes individual candy wrappers, large candy bags, and multi-pack candy bags.
-Cookie Packaging Brigade: Accepted waste includes cookie packaging like Oreos, Chips Ahoy, and Keebler Cookies.
-Chip Bag Brigade: Accepted waste includes chip bags, tortilla chip bags, pretzel bags, etc.
-Paired Shoe Brigade: Accepted waste includes pairs of women’s, men’s, and children’s shoes, which may include athletic sneakers, cleats, flats, high heels, dress shoes, boots, and fashion or casual sneakers.
Unacceptable waste includes ski boots, roller skates, roller blades, ice skates, completely broken or ruined footwear, single shoes, rubber flip flops, and slippers.
-Writing Instruments Brigade: Accepted waste includes pens, pen caps, mechanical pencils, markers, highlighters, and permanent markers. Pencils are NOT accepted.
-Elmer’s Glue Crew Brigade: Accepted waste includes Elmer’s glue sticks, Elmer’s glue bottles, and Elmer’s glue tops. ONLY Elmer’s brands are accepted.
-Scotch Tape Brigade: Accepted waste includes all plastic tape dispensers and plastic tape cores.
-Solo Cup Brigade: Accepted waste includes specially marked plastic #6 cups.
Please bring these items to the collection boxes located at the Hillwood Information Desk.
For each item that is collected, Terracycle will donate 2 cents to LIU Post. This money will be added to LIU Post Recycling Scholarship.

EPHRATAH - Two local Scouts from the Sir William Johnson Boy Scout District have been selected to participate in the 2015 World Scout Jamboree.
The pair - 12-year-old Dallis Green and 11-year-old Makayla Gray - are holding a recycling drive to raise the money needed to attend.
The World Scout Jamboree will be held in Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi City, Japan, from July 28 to Aug. 8, 2015. The trip will cost the girls $4,000 each, Makayla's mother, Sara Gray, said.
Makayla Gray, left, and Dallis Green are shown in this undated photo. The pair are raising money to World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015.
While at the event, the girls will meet over 30,000 other Scouts from around the world from over 40 other countries.
Green and Gray are in a new pilot program through the Junior Explorer Club Post 2335, which is under Boy Scouts of America and is open to boys and girls in sixth to eighth grade, Sara Gray said.
Makayla Gray said she became interested in the World Scout Jamboree after her brother Brent attended the event in Sweden in 2011.
"After my brother went to Sweden, he was talking about it and I really wanted to see the things they do in other countries and see the culture," Makayla Gray said. "There are a whole bunch of activities that happen during the Jamboree too, like scuba diving."
The two Scouts were looking for ways to generate money for the trip and found two companies that will provide cash for certain recycled items.
"We wanted to make the world a better place because waste like this normally goes in the ground," Makayla Gray said. "We wanted to see the things we could recycle to not have so much stuff in the dirt."
One of the companies is TerraCycle, which provides free waste collection programs for hard-to-recycle materials that will then be turned into affordable green products. The other company is CC Cash USA, which is in the business of recycling cell phones, toner cartridges, inkjets, laptops and iPods.
The items the girls will be collecting to raise money for the trip include inkjet and toner cartridges, potato chip bags, candy wrappers and electronics such as laptops and cell phones.
Sara Gray said the girls started the fundraiser a month ago and have earned about $300.
She said it took a little while to spread the word of what they were doing, but now they are seeing a steady number of contributions. She said the money per item varies but usually ranges between 2 cents and $25, depending on what is being recycled.
If anyone would like to support their effort, the girls can drop off a recycling box at any location and come to pick up these items at regularly scheduled times, Sara Gray said.
A donation also can be made by contacting Jessie Viteo at 568-5697 or calling Bruce or Sara Gray at 762-7383 for a pickup. Any checks can be made payable to Sara Gray.
Scouts Gray and Green also have a Facebook account where they will post updates and interesting information as they go along at
www.facebook.com/recyclingqueensworldscoutjamboree.
"It is still three years away, but I am excited and we really want to go," Makayla Gray said.
With holiday-related “to do’s” dancing in our heads, the scurrying and worrying has begun. What to get for family members who are impossible to buy for? Where to find classy or unique gift for your husband, wife or that special someone?
If you want to be more green with this year’s gifts, check out Hipcycle.com, one of the leading online retailers for upcycled items.
The term “upcycled” was coined in 2002 by William McDonaugh & Michael Braungart for their book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. Upcycling is the process of converting a material into something of similar or greater value, to a second life – using waste materials to create “new” useful products.
Each Upcycled Woven Tin Bracelet is a one-of-a-kind
It’s been called a greener way of recycling. Upcycling generally requires less energy than recycling, keeps materials once considered waste from going into landfills and reduces the need to manufacture new products .
I’ve written about upcycling in the past in reference to TerraCycle and its take-back Brigades and Upcycle the Gyres, which is working to upcycle ocean plastic debris into diesel, gasoline, and kerosene.
Add Hipcycle to the ranks of these organizations.
Launched in spring 2011 by founder Andrew Sell, Hipcycle takes Reduce-Reuse-Recycle – the new 3 R’s – to the next level. It faces the global waste issue head-on, offering attractive, durable, fairly priced upcycled items – “alternatives to traditional home decor, jewelry and fashion as a way to reduce global waste.”
