The school will also earn playground credits for each shipment of empty toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes and floss containers sent to TerraCycle. The school with the top credits after Sept. 30 will receive the new playground. The first and second runner-up schools, as well as six honorable mention participants, will be awarded various prizes and Meijer gift cards.
Titled “Park Your Butts,” the campaign puts cigarette butt recycling receptacles — butt bins — in strategically picked locations downtown. Once full, butts are sent to New Jersey-based TerraCycle, where they are recycled into industrial-grade plastic goods. “Cigarette butts are a regular nuisance in Salem,” said Mayor Kim Driscoll.
The Sea Otter Foundation and Trust, a nonprofit based in Westminster, is dedicated to recycling. Established in 2013, the organization raises funds for sea otter researchers, biologists and conservation initiatives while raising awareness in Colorado. This summer, the foundation won an award from TerraCycle for recycling efforts, specifically in the beauty care items category. To get involved, visit

TerraCycle's
Cigarette Waste Brigade has collected nearly 36 million units of cigarette butts to date. By using funding from Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, TerraCycle has the ability to turn the cigarette waste into plastic pellets, while composting the leftover tobacco. Additionally, for every pound of cigarette waste collected, Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company donates $1 to the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program.
Butt bins for cigarette recycling have been placed around the downtown area and labeled with bright yellow decals to make them visible. Once full, butts are sent to New Jersey-based TerraCycle, where they are recycled into industrial-grade plastic goods. Future plans for “Park Your Butts” include enlisting the help of local business owners and Salem residents to increase the usage of the bins and to expand the program outside of the downtown district to city parks and other neighborhoods.

TerraCycle’s mission is to “eliminate the idea of waste.” We run free consumer recycling programs, called Brigades, for waste streams that are typically considered non-recyclable. From drink pouches, toothbrushes and makeup containers to coffee capsules and even cigarette butts, our recycling programs give new life to waste that would otherwise be destined for the landfill.
