Begin mei was daar aflevering 2 van Get on the Dance Floor, het Europese SVN congres in Egmond. Nietsvermoedend krijgt opeens alles een plek voor me. Noemen ze dat geïnspireerd raken? Ik denk het wel. Gek gevoel eigenlijk als iemand woorden geeft aan iets waar ‘jij ook van bent’. Dat waar je al jaren aan werkt, opeens expliciet wordt. Dat waar je dacht dat je er alleen mee bezig bent iemand al (veel) verder mee is. Kortom een soort van EUREKA moment. Dat had ik dus afgelopen conferentie. Lippitt School students know their three R’s – how to be respectful, responsible and ready. And to that they could add a fourth R – recycling. With the help of parents Kelly Pennacchini and Monica Burr, first grade teachers Christine Paquin and Wendy Bruce have introduced the Community Recycling KIDS program at the school with the intent of collecting 7,500 pounds of clothes and other soft goods. The goal of the program is to teach children about reuse and highlight how more than 70 percent of the world’s population is dependent on second-hand goods. With Paquin’s direction, the school is also participating in TerraCycle, a program to collect items from old computer keyboards to cell phones, salty snack bags and candy wrappers.

Hackensack University Medical Center announced Wednesday it will partner with recycling pioneer TerraCycle, of Princeton, to convert difficult-to-recycle items such as keyboards and mice, diaper packaging, chip bags, and writing utensils into eco-friendly consumer products and industrial applications.

Afgelopen winter organiseerden TerraCycle en pennenfabrikant BIC de grote “Hoe helpt mijn school?” opstelwedstrijd waaraan leerlingen verspreid door heel Nederland deelnamen. Scholieren beschreven in hun opstel hoe de school zich voor mens en milieu inzet. Vier prijzen waren te winnen en de hoofdprijs van € 1500 werd door Marit Holwerda van het Greijdanus College in Zwolle in de wacht gesleept. Het gewonnen prijsgeld schenken de winnende scholieren aan zijn/haar favoriete goede doel. Vandaag ontving Marit de cheque en overhandigde deze tegelijk aan een vertegenwoordiger van Stichting Red een Kind.
