Phenix PreK-8 has expanded its recycling program as it works to raise $1,000 for butterfly gardens in two of its courtyards.
The school recently joined the TerraCycle program, which converts empty juice pouches from brands including Capri Sun and Kool-Aid into new products such as bags. It is also collecting cans.
Every pouch students turn in earns the school two cents, said Jessica Scott, a preschool teacher who is coordinating the effort. Phenix also started a "beautification fund" for cash donations toward the project.
Did you know billions of drink pouches are thrown out each year? TerraCycle collects these discarded pouches and turns them into cool products. Sponsored by the drink pouch makers themselves (CapriSun and Kool-Aid) these groovy pencil case holders will be the talk at the lunch table. You can get your school involved too. Collect drink pouches, turn them in and collect cash for your school. Go to www.terracycle.net and find out more. Pencil cases starting at $2. (TerraCycle makes lunch boxes too. See page XXX)
Keep your pens and pencils organized in this case made entirely from drink pouches that have been stitched together. Used pouches are cleaned and sewn to make these pencil cases. TerraCycle is an upcycling and recycling company that collects and reuses non-recyclable trash. Buy it for $2.49 at www.terracycleshop.com.
One group of Oconee County elementary school students has managed to put a dent in that mountain of foil and plastic one lunch period at a time.
Fifth-graders at Malcom Bridge Elementary School have collected about 20,000 juice pouches, the kind used by Capri Sun and Kool-Aid, since September. They can't be recycled locally, but the students send them to an out-of-town company that pays them 2 cents a bag for their trouble.
