ELIMINATING THE IDEA OF WASTE®

Through Program, Sheehan Students Can 'Upcycle' Drink Pouches

Westwood has certainly shown its fair share of effort in educating residents on how to be environmentally friendly by engaging in recycling best practices. But the truth of the matter is, not everything can be recycled. That, however, doesn't mean the only other destination for such items is a landfill. Now, thanks to a company known as TerraCycle, these items can be "upcycled".

Coolers from Recycled Packaging

Ozark Trail coolers, a line at Walmart stores, have a plastic liner made entirely from snack packaging that has been recycled by a company called TerraCycle. The coolers range in size from 6-can to 42-can (on wheels) and range in price from $5.88 to $29.88. Anyone can send in their used wrappers to the company for free and for every piece of packaging that TerraCycle receives, participants are awarded with two points, which can be put toward buying a specific charity gift, or converted to money and donated to a charity of the participant's choice.

The North Face to Reduce Landfill Waste

San Leandro, CA — The North Face®, a premier supplier of outdoor apparel, equipment and footwear, has partnered with upcycling and recycling pioneer TerraCycle® to keep plastic polybags — used to protect apparel through distribution and transit — out of landfills. The North Face Polybag Brigade® will divert 100% of the polybag packaging waste at the 20 The North Face retail stores in the United States where #4 plastic bags are not readily recyclable. “Eliminating waste at all stages of the product lifecycle is a key component of The North Face comprehensive sustainability program,” says Adam Mott, corporate sustainability manager for The North Face.
