Het recyclen van afgedankte pennen is goed voor het milieu én levert geld op. De werkgroep Sterrenburg Duurzaam en de Stichting Dordrecht-Bamenda gaan daarom samen oude pennen inzamelen.
De opbrengst van de inzamelingsactie komt ten goede aan
het Wakka-Project in Bamenda; een project voor advies en behandeling van mentaal gehandicapte kinderen in de partnerstad van Dordrecht.
Vuilstortplaats
Lege of kapotte pennen worden meestal weggegooid. Zo komen ze op vuilstortplaatsen en in verbrandingsovens terrecht. Dat is niet alleen schadelijk voor het milieu, maar ook volstrekt onnodig. Schrijfwaren kunnen namelijk eenvoudig worden gerecycled. Elke balpen, vulpen, kleurstift, drukpotlood, markeerstift, permanent en tekstmarker kan worden ingeleverd. Dit gelt ook voor correctieproducten (vloeistof of tape). Merk of materiaal spelen geen rol.

There is a popular topic that I like to tackle every so often. It's how to recycle items that may be a bit tricky. Never fear, you can Do Your Part to find eco-friendly solutions. Here are few items that I get asked about and ways you can get them all responsibly recycled.
Toothpaste Tubes and Toothbrushes
How many tubes of toothpaste do you think you've thrown in the trash after you've gotten that last squeeze? What about old toothbrushes? Once you're done with them there are ways to get them recycled. In fact, TerraCycle will pay for you to send them in. From there, they are made into plastic pellets that can then be molded into everything from playground equipment to garden tools.

Jim Ayala ’84 and Tom Szaky ’05 were among 24 named Social Entrepreneurs of the Year for 2013 by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship on Feb. 15. Through this award, Szaky, CEO of TerraCycle Inc., and Ayala, a University trustee and CEO of Hybrid Social Solutions Inc., will be joining the Schwab Foundation community of social entrepreneurs, which includes 234 social entrepreneurs from 59 countries.

Pocono Medical Center's Environmental Awareness Council set up red bins to collect shoes through the TerraCycle Shoe Brigade in December. The goal was to recycle old shoes through TerraCycle to help raise money for the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center. It keeps shoes out of landfills and reuses new or gently worn shoes by donating them to the needy in the community. To date, the efforts of the council have resulted in more than $300 being donated to the cancer center.
