Hoofddorp – Carla Bakker uit Hoofddorp haalt op een hele bijzondere manier geld op voor Stichting Chris; een organisatie die preventie, advies en pastoraat aan kinderen en jongeren biedt. Ze zamelt oude pennen en stiften in en krijgt hier donaties voor. Nadat de stichting flinke bezuinigingen te verwerken kreeg, ging Carla, daar al jaren actief als vrijwilligster, op zoek naar andere manieren om geld binnen te halen. Ze las over de BIC Schrijfwaren Brigade van recyclebedrijf TerraCycle en besloot zich meteen in te schrijven. Via dit programma krijgen de pennen een tweede leven en ontvangt de stichting 2 cent per ingezamelde stuk. Een paar maanden en heel wat dozen pennen later is het succes van de actie een feit. Carla trok dan ook alles uit de kast om zoveel mogelijk in te zamelen. Van berichtjes in de wijkkrant tot een oproep op Radio Noord Holland. Haar hele netwerk werd opgetrommeld om te helpen. En alle moeite heeft zich dubbel en dwars uitbetaald. Carla heeft tot haar eigen verbazing in enkele maanden tijd 9000 pennen ingezameld en hiermee bijna 200 euro voor de stichting opgehaald. Een bijzondere prestatie die vooral te danken is aan haar enorme inzet en enthousiasme. Ze is naast werkzaam voor de stichting ook activiteitencoördinato namens de wijkraad Graan voor Visch in de gelijknamige buurt in Hoofddorp. Ze noemt zichzelf dan ook fulltime vrijwilligster. Carla: “mijn man verdient de kost en daar kunnen we met zijn tweeën rond van komen. We hebben geen kinderen en ik besteed een groot deel van mijn tijd aan vrijwilligerswerk. Vanuit mijn Christelijke achtergrond heb ik mij altijd ingezet voor een betere wereld, zowel op lokaal niveau in de wijk als daarbuiten.” Deze actie past dan ook geheel bij haar maatschappelijk betrokken leven. Niet de enige manier dus waarop ze zich inzet voor een ander, maar de penneninzameling neemt wel een speciale plaats in vanwege de verschillende voordelen. Carla:“De actie werkt van verschillende kanten. Ik haal er donaties mee binnen en draag mijn steentje bij aan een beter milieu, maar dit initiatief biedt mij ook een goede manier om de stichting te promoten en met mensen in contact te komen. Ik krijg hier zoveel leuke reacties op.” Maar het belangrijkste is natuurlijk zoveel mogelijk geld binnenhalen voor de stichting die net als zoveel andere non-profit organisaties te leiden heeft onder de huidige bezuinigingen. Crisis of geen crisis, er zijn altijd jongeren die hulp en steun kunnen gebruiken.

A TerraCycle Magyarország Kft. a Hulladékcsökkentési Hét keretében vállalta, hogy a gyűjtőpartnerénél, a HungaroControl Zrt.-nél a program ideje alatt keletkező cigarettacsikkeket újrahasznosítja, hogy azokból újra műanyagot és környezetbarát termékeket készítsen. A gyűjtés a TerraCycle folyamatosan futó cigarettacsikk-gyűjtő programja részeként valósult meg, így nem csak a Hulladékcsökkentési Hét ideje alatt, hanem azon kívül is folyamatosan fut.

They participate in TerraCycle’s Beauty Brigade, where up to 40 different types of beauty products can be collected and sent in, including shampoo and conditioner bottles, soap tubes and dispensers, foundation packaging, body wash containers and much more. She’s also put up nine collection bins around Princeton University so that students can easily participate

With our TerraCycle brigade, we really wanted to help him out and get some great new equipment that he could use to engage the kids even more, keeping them active as part of developing a healthy lifestyle.  We also just really wanted to be able to give something fun to the kids!  So we got right to work.  We worked things out with the principal.  Beth and I put together a collection box for the pouch drinks.  We wrapped it in silver wrapping paper so that it even sort of looks like a big pouch drink!  We taped some different brands of pouch drinks, including Capri Sun, to the top so that students would know what to put inside.

Sometimes, the best things in life fall into your lap and are earned at the same time.  You may recall me talking about starting a TerraCycle Brigade with a local school a while back.   Fast forward a couple of months and those kids really did their part in saving their drink pouches and toothbrushes to recycle in my DIY Monster Recycling bins.  And of course they were rewarded, big time.  Not just with worms!

It turned out it would work better if we had the entire school collecting drink pouches instead of the wide variety of products we initially thought we’d try. Local members of the Surfrider Foundation have a simple message for smokers: Hold on to your butt. The environmental group’s multi-city campaign urges smokers to dispose of their cigarette butts somewhere other than streets, parks and beaches, proclaiming: Beaches and Streets Are Not Ashtrays. For now, there is a single disposal canister for spent cigarettes on Broad Street next to the Victoria Event Centre, but the plan is to add several more. Six additional units have been ordered and places to install them will be identified, said Lucas Harris, vice-chairman of Surfrider’s South Island Chapter. “We’re just chomping at the bit to start getting these things out there and spread the word in the community so that people see them in the street.” Smoker Bernard Boerkamp walked past the Broad Street container Friday and said he welcomes it. “I always look for places like this,” he said, cigarette in hand. “The streets are full of butts.” Another fan is Darren Douglas, part of the Downtown Victoria Business Association Clean Team. Douglas’s regular routine has him picking up all sorts of trash from streets and sidewalks, and he said cigarette butts are always in good supply. He said you can find butts almost anywhere, but they can be a real problem outside night spots.“Years ago, they used to have ashtrays everywhere,” Douglas said as he made his rounds along Broad. He said he is all for having disposal units geared to smokers, but questioned whether they would be used. “Like garbage cans, people throw their stuff right beside them.” Surfrider plans to ship the collected butts to TerraCycle, a recycling outfit. “One of the focuses of Surfrider is to get cigarette butts out of ocean, out of the garbage stream, off the ground,” said Mike Redpath, a member of the group. “Cigarette material is recyclable.” Plastic from cigarette filters can be used in building pallets, while the leftover paper and tobacco can be composted.
