St. Joseph the Carpenter School is competing to win a playground made from recycled oral care waste through the second annual Recycled Playground Challenge, courtesy of Colgate-Palmolive ("Colgate"), the global oral care leader; ShopRite, which has more than 250 stores in the Northeast; and recycling pioneer TerraCycle.

Catherine E. Doyle Elementary School in Wood-Ridge is in the running for a new playground. Richard Fallon, vice president of the Wood-Ridge Public Education Foundation, said that the school has been entered into an online contest to win a free playground from TerraCycle, a New Jersey-based company.

Students of Sunnymead Elementary School have reached the first level of a TerraCycle and Capri Sun recycling program by collecting 10,000 drink pouches. By hitting this level, the students have earned almost $800 for their school.

Middle schools students can consume a lot of fruity liquids from tiny straws, the students of St. Margaret Mary Catholic School on the Southeast Side included. In the past year, they’ve collected enough of those shiny pouches to earn $600 for their school while protecting the environment.

Gorinchem - 01-06-2015 - Middelbare school De Uilenhof is een van de meest enthousiaste Nederlandse teams dat zich heeft aangemeld bij de Fruittella Snoep Brigade. De school verzamelt niet alleen lege snoepverpakkingen om zo geld in te zamelen, maar ook pennen en lege huishoudartikelen. Ze maken hiermee onderdeel uit van een nieuw recyclingprogramma van TerraCycle waarbij consumenten snoepverpakkingen kunnen recyclen. Als beloning hiervoor krijgen ze een financiële bijdrage waarmee een goed doel van eigen keuze kan worden gesteund. Dieneke Drost – ten Hove, initiatiefneemster van het project, over de inzameling: “De leerlingen zijn erg enthousiast over de inzamelingsactie. Ze vinden het erg leuk om het bedrag te zien stijgen en complimenten te krijgen als ze veel inleveren.” Op de school draagt iedereen z’n steentje bij. Niet alleen de leerlingen sparen volop mee, ook de ouders en leraren zijn hard aan het sparen. Bij de inzamelbakken hangt een geldthermometer die bij houdt hoeveel geld er ingezameld is. “Het geld dat we inzamelen met TerraCycle gebruiken we voor een bouwproject in de Filipijnen.” Een jaar geleden zijn drie docenten en drie leerlingen er naartoe gereisd om mee te werken aan dit bouwproject. De Uilenhof heeft inmiddels met alle acties die ze doen €17000,- euro opgehaald. Naast de snoepverpakkingen zijn de leerlingen vol enthousiasme van start gegaan voor de nieuwe Ambi Pur Huishoud Brigade. Bij deze laatste Brigade is het nu extra spannend aangezien er een grote wedstrijd aan de gang is, met een hoofdprijs van maar liefst €1000. Hiervoor zamelen ze lege verpakkingen van huishoudmiddelen in, zoals plastic spuitkoppen, luchtverfrissers en toiletblokken. De Fruittella Snoep Brigade is een gezamenlijk initiatief van Fruittella en TerraCycle. Fruittella neemt al jaren haar verantwoordelijkheid als het gaat om natuurlijke kleur- en smaakstoffen en portieverpakkingen. Een logische volgende stap is deze samenwerking met TerraCycle om samen met consumenten verantwoord om te gaan met snoepverpakkingen. Dit programma maakt het mogelijk om gratis snoepverpakkingen te recyclen en bovendien een donatie aan een zelf gekozen goed doel te doen. Inmiddels zijn er verspreid over heel Nederland teams actief die op deze manier een concrete bijdrage leveren aan het milieu en de maatschappij. Alle ingezamelde snoepverpakkingen worden op innovatieve wijze verwerkt tot nieuwe duurzame grondstoffen en producten.
