Es por esto que se crearon iniciativas para reciclarlas. Hasta ahora, se han realizado obras de arte y ropa con estos desechos.
Nueva Orleans es una de las ciudades que instaló 50 receptáculos para colillas de cigarros. Los creadores del proyecto aseguraron que esta es la primera localidad de Estados Unidos que participa en una iniciativa de reciclaje como esta.
Canadá fue el país que lanzó esta campaña el año pasado. TerraCycle Inc. es la empresa que lanzó la idea y fue la que aseguró que se le pagará a Nueva Orleans 4 dólares por cada 5 kilos de colillas que recicle.
Una vez que se recolecten los desechos, serán procesados como abono. Aunque los filtros de cigarrillos contienen acetato de celulosa, el cual es considerado un plástico, se eliminarán las toxinas contenidas en el interior con rayos gamma.
