Now more than ever, it’s important that we reduce our ecological footprint to create a greener world for the future. Scouts Canada has always encouraged members to do their part to create a cleaner environment, whether it be through litter cleanups or leave-no-trace initiatives that encourage people to leave the surrounding environment the way they found it. Recycling is one of the easiest ways to be green, and there are so many things you can recycle!
Each morning is the beginning of a new day and another chance to make the world a better place. Think your actions don't make a difference? Think again!
Taking small, mindful actions for positive improvement can have a great impact on your community and inspire others to do the same. There are so many opportunities to do good for the planet, and many of them are right under your nose.
Here are three ways you can do your part to make the world a better place...all before 10 a.m.
* Concentrate on your morning routine. So much of what we do in the morning can be condensed to consume less and do much more. Try to reduce your water usage by shortening your shower time and don't let it run while you brush your teeth. Make your own coffee and lunch to cut down on food packaging waste. Carpool to put fewer vehicles on the road and get to know your co-workers.
* Engage in "mindful" acts of kindness. Make it a point to hold the door open for a stranger, compliment your co-worker's outfit or new hairstyle, or buy a snack for the person behind you in line. To be kind is an act of solidarity, and doing good for others will inspire members of your community to do the same. Kindness is the currency of change: spend wisely and often.
* Learn about new ways to recycle. Did you know that Malt-O-Meal cereal bags can be recycled through a free program in partnership with TerraCycle, a New Jersey-based recycling company? To begin with, Malt-O-Meal bagged cereal creates 75 percent less packaging waste than boxed cereal with a bag inside. Through the MOM Brands Cereal Bag Recycling Program, you can ensure that none of it ends up in the landfill and raise money for charity at the same time!

One of
TerraCycle’s longtime partners,
MOM Brands (Malt-O-Meal Company), rejects the common cereal packaging setup, instead packaging its cereal brands in a re-sealable plastic bag that creates 75 percent less packaging waste than comparably sized cereal boxes. What’s more, MOM Brands’ cereal bags can be
recycled through TerraCyclethrough its sponsored program, which also accepts plastic cereal box liners from conventional cereal packaging.
At TerraCycle, we have a variety of public drop-off recycling programs for traditionally difficult-to-recycle waste streams. Participants interested in starting a public drop-off location in their community simply sign up for a program, set up a collection bin, and begin accepting waste from others in the community.
Coyote Howling has been identified as an official New Mexico Donation Station for the cereal bags Brigade© sponsored by Malt-o-Meal Brands™. The designation shows on the national map for TerraCycle to alert those wanting to support TerraCycle recycling. Coyote Howling is the only station in New Mexico.
Randi Tuck has been getting residents involved in one of New York–based TerraCycle’s recycling programs for the past few years. Through the MOM Brands Cereal Bag Brigade, Mechanicsville Elementary School has become a drop-off location for collecting empty plastic liners from cereal boxes. Tuck will donate money that she receives from collecting the bags to the elementary school.
For the past five to six years, the owner of Pharcraft, an arts and crafts supply store in Florence, has been collecting various plastics to send to TerraCycle. The New Jersey-based waste management company gives Mr. Hoch points for his donations, which he can redeem for cash. He usually receives a couple hundred dollars a year for his donations, which he then allocates to the R.U.G. Activity Center that he and his wife started in Florence.
Zion Evangelical Congregational Church, 57 N. Church St., Mohnton, has become a collection point for plastic cereal bags in the MOM Brands Cereal Bag Brigade for TerraCycle. By collecting MOM Brands cereal packaging, residents help divert cereal bags from landfills. The church will earn points for every unit of waste it collects and sends to TerraCycle.
