Zwischen August und Dezember letzten Jahres sammelten die AOK PLUS-Mitarbeiter in Sachsen und Thüringen alles, was nicht mehr schreiben wollte. Ob Filzer, Füller, Fineliner, Kuli oder Marker – alles landete in Kisten, die sich zwischenzeitlich in der Dresdner Pressestelle hoch auftürmten.
Sage und Schreibe 47.473 Stifte kamen zusammen, die als Zwischenwährung in bare Münze an das Recyclingunternehmen TerraCycle versendet wurden. Das Unternehmen sammelt und recycelt Stifte, die sonst verbrannt oder auf der Deponie landen würden. Ökologisch gesehen ist dieser Weg die deutlich bessere Lösung und zugleich eine wunderbare Möglichkeit soziale Projekte damit zu unterstützen. Denn die ausgemisteten Stifte brachten einen Umtauschwert von 944,76 Euro, die für die Anschaffung eines Rollstuhls für die Kinderorthopädie des Marienstift Arnstadt eingesetzt wurden.
Acht neue Handpuppen konnten dank der Aktion "Stifte sammeln für unsere Kinder" angeschafft werden. "Diese therapeutischen Handpuppen erleichtern die Kontaktaufnahme und den Zugang zu den Kindern", erklärt Horn.
Seit August 2012 läuft die Aktion "Stifte sammeln für unsere Kinder" im Uniklinikum Dresden. Hierfür wurden auf den Stationen und in öffentlichen Bereichen 30 Sammelkartons für alte Kugelschreiber, Filzstifte, Fineliner, Druckbleistifte und Tintenlöscher auf- gestellt. Die Stifte landen somit nicht im Restmüll, sondern werden an "TerraCycle" gesandt, das diese recycelt. Für jeden Stift spendet dieses Unternehmen zwei bis drei Cent an die "Stiftung Hochschulmedizin Dresden".
Der große Traum des behinderten Fabiano aus Wolfenbüttel ist es, irgendwann laufen zu können. Hirnblutungen und Infektionen haben bei dem 9-Jährigen zu einer halbseitigen spastischen Lähmung und Epilepsie geführt. Eine Hirn-OP half dem Jungen. Dass er jedoch herumtoben könnte, hielten Ärzte damals für unwahrscheinlich. Dank der sogenannten Adeli-Therapie in der Slowakei macht Fabiano inzwischen immense Fortschritte. Da die Krankenkasse allerdings nur einen Teil der 4.500 Euro teuren Therapie übernimmt, haben Fabianos Eltern eine Stifte-Sammel-Aktion ins Leben gerufen. Kaputte oder leergeschriebene Filzstifte, Kugelschreiber und Textmarker werden dabei gesammelt und recycelt. Für jeden Stift gehen zwei Cent auf Fabianos Spendenkonto. So kommt er seinem Ziel Stück für Stück näher, irgendwann ein selbstständiges Leben führen zu können.

Simon merkt nicht, wenn sein Blutzucker-Spiegel bedrohlich steigt oder sinkt. Hund Fly könnte diese Situation rechtzeitig erkennen, sofort Alarm schlagen und ihn dadurch vor lebensbedrohlichen Situationen bewahren. Für die Familie wäre die Ausbildung eine enorme Entlastung und gäbe ihnen ein besseres Gefühl. Doch die Ausbildung von Border Collie-Hündin Fly ist sehr zeitaufwändig und kostenintensiv. Sie wird von den Krankenkassen leider nicht übernommen.
Daher sammeln wir Stifte um bei dieser Finanzierung zu helfen. Dank der Firma TerraCycle und BiC können wir Stifte aus Plastik und Metall recyceln lassen und erhalten dafür eine kleine finanzielle Unterstützung, die wir für die Warnhund-Ausbildung einsetzen.

For the new Sealord Pouch Recycling Programme, the company has partnered with TerraCycle to offer Kiwis an innovative recycling option.Consumers can now collect the pouch packaging used in Sealord Tuna Pockets and Tuna Express ranges, clean them and post them to TerraCycle for free. The materials will then be used to make brand-new plastic goods, while collectors will receive two cents for every pouch they collect.
“Our partnership with TerraCycle gives consumers the option to divert this product packaging from landfill. So it is a win-win on taste and recyclability,” said Craig Harrison, senior brand manager, Sealord NZ.

Taking small, mindful actions for positive improvement can have a great impact on your community and inspire others to do the same. There are so many opportunities to do good for the planet, and many of them are right under your nose.
Here are three ways you can do your part to make the world a better place...all before 10 a.m.
* Concentrate on your morning routine. So much of what we do in the morning can be condensed to consume less and do much more. Try to reduce your water usage by shortening your shower time and don't let it run while you brush your teeth. Make your own coffee and lunch to cut down on food packaging waste. Carpool to put fewer vehicles on the road and get to know your co-workers.
* Engage in "mindful" acts of kindness. Make it a point to hold the door open for a stranger, compliment your co-worker's outfit or new hairstyle, or buy a snack for the person behind you in line. To be kind is an act of solidarity, and doing good for others will inspire members of your community to do the same. Kindness is the currency of change: spend wisely and often.
* Learn about new ways to recycle. Did you know that Malt-O-Meal cereal bags can be recycled through a free program in partnership with TerraCycle, a New Jersey-based recycling company?
