The ASUCD Coffee House (CoHo) continues to become more environmentally-friendly through its participation in the New Jersey-based upcycling company TerraCycle’s Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade. Through this partnership, which began in fall 2013, the CoHo collects used wrappers in the CoHo and the dining commons and sends them to TerraCycle to be recycled in exchange for money; shipping labels and costs are covered by the brigade’s sponsor, Larabar. To support this recycling program, students can add their wrappers to the collection box by the Marketplace cashiers in the CoHo.
To reduce some of this waste, my company, TerraCycle, has a variety of recycling programs for commonly difficult-to-recycle performance snack packages. Fitness enthusiasts can now recycle their GU Energy Labs product packaging, Clif Bar and LARABAR wrappers, and Bear Naked granola pouches through our
free recycling platforms.
With summer fast approaching, millions of people are eagerly preparing themselves for marathons, endurance competitions, and similar “extreme sport” events across the world. From Tough Mudder to the Ironman Triathlon, these massive competitions test the stamina and agility of people around the world every year.
Like FSTG, Larabar is committed to the non-GMO project, ensuring its consumers that fifteen of its products are certified non-GMO! Since their partnership with TerraCycle, Larabar wrappers are part of the Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade, a free recycling program and fundraiser opportunity for participants.
UW–Stout currently has two TerraCycle bins, one in the MSC and another on the third floor of Jarvis. These bins collect electronics and ink cartridges. There will be six bins placed around campus that students can throw reusable items that they normally must place in the trash.
Start by keeping track of your waste and then over time minimizing your waste output. This year join one of TerraCycle's Brigade's, which includes an Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade, Cork Brigade, Yogurt Brigade, and Bear Naked Granola Brigades.
For their efforts, they will receive a two-cent per cup refund and a $60 prize from the contest sponsor, New Jersey-based Terracycle Inc.
Terracycle strives to outsmart waste by creating collection programs for previously difficult to recycle waste. Here at CC, students and teachers are encouraged to save their used energy bar wrappers, candy bar wrappers, cereal bag liners, as well as old writing instruments such as pens, markers, sharpies, mechanical pencils etc.
Trick-or-treating through the whole neighborhood can really work up a sweat! Keep the kids hydrated by passing out an Appely Ever After or Berry Berry Good Lemonade. Each pouch is only 40 calories and sweetened with only fruit juice. Plus, Honest Tea participates in the
TerraCycle program!
