TerraCycle Pots Come to Walmart
Everything’s coming up garbage. This April, garden center shoppers in select Walmart stores will see something other than the traditional black pots in which flowers are traditionally sold. Garden State Growers and TerraCycle will offer annuals in upcycled margarine tubs in Walmart stores throughout the Northeast—including stores in New Milford and Torrington.
The upcycled pots are a more eco-friendly option as they eliminate the need to use virgin plastic and can be returned to TerraCycle to be used again. The plants will retail for approximately $5 each and be shipped April 17 to stores in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

TerraCycle takes the effort much further by accepting far more electronics than just cellphones. However, the most common collections for TerraCycle programs are for cellphones, laptops, digital cameras, mp3 players and any combination thereof.
"Schools, churches and nonprofits get paid for every item sent in, and there is no shipping cost for participants, as TerraCycle covers this," George W. Chevalier III, spokesperson for TerraCycle, told TechNewsWorld. "Any items that can be refurbished are, and the rest are all disassembled and recycled, here on U.S. soil."
Trash Triumphs for Education Treasure
Dried out pens, highlighters and markers, candy wrappers, plastic containers, ink and toner cartridges, cell phones, laptops and more are being recycled at Broward College for educational scholarships.
Since starting the program, Broward College has rescued more than 171,000 items from entering area landfills, which translates into and nearly $3,000 for scholarships. The Broward College Foundation awarded its first scholarship funded through recycling efforts and private donations during the spring semester.
Jarrod Hersch leads the college’s Terracycle program committee and students sort and package the items. “I am pleased at the response, said Hersch. “Many faculty members have even incorporated Terracycle into their classes.” Hersch continued, “We have exceeded our collection goals and this year our goal is to keep 200,000 items out of the ‘waste stream.’ Additionally, if we collect the most used or broken cell phones, laptops, mp3 players or digital cameras by Earth Day on April 22, Terracycle will donate an additional $500. We are competing against other area collection teams which include schools, colleges, religious groups, non-profit and community organizations.”

At least two national retailers with stores in Cumberland County are participating in recycling programs that start in April, which is Earth Month.
