Event details
Anyone who brings a Kraft String Cheese package to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will receive $15 off their general admission ticket, from now until October 10th, 2011.
TerraCycle will collect the String Cheese packaging to be recycling into plastic lumber, plastic pavers, trash cans, and flower/garden planters, among other things. This prevents the normally non-recyclable cheese packaging from ending up in a landfill!
Visitors can continue recycling packaging that is usually non-recyclable by signing up for TerraCycle’s Brigade program, through which these items are collected. For every piece of trash that a Brigade sends in, they will receive two points, which can be put towards a specific charity gift or converted to cash and donated to the participant’s charity of choice.

An important component of the Elementary Program has been understanding the importance of our community and protecting the environment. Students learned that some of the products we use, like Capri Sun drink pouches, are non-recyclable. As a result, in October of 2010 our class decided to collect drink pouches and send them to
TerraCycle, a company that turns drink pouches, chip bags, and candy wrappers into backpacks, coolers, folders, lunch boxes, and other cool products. TerraCycle will give our program 2 cents for every drink pouch collected and we are proud to say that
we have collected a total of 1,313 drink pouches!
The Elementary Program will continue to collect drink pouches throughout the summer and into the next academic year. If you consume Capri Suns or any other brand of drink pouches we encourage you to drop them off at our Elementary Program Recycling Station.
First they greened-up their ingredients, then they focused on concentrates. Now, eco cleaning companies are boosting their cred with innovative package design. Here, four waste-saving solutions.
I love art. And being crafty. So this summer I am all about finding ways to get my kids away from the television with new and fun projects.
I recently came across two that I'm eager to try from my friends at TerraCycle.
Solo Cup Planters
You'll need some empty plastic cups, art supplies (like stickers & markers), potting soil, and seeds or plants.
Step 1: Wash out some used plastic cups or pull them out of the recycling bin. You can also use a milk jug, 2 liter soda bottle, or anything else the same shape. Just cut off the top to create a "cup".
Step 2: Decorate your cups or label them with what will be in them.
Step 3: Plant your flowers or herbs. You can get a packet of seeds for less than a dollar or purchase plants for $2-3.
Chip Bag Chip Bowl
For this one, all you need is a bag of chips, some tape, and four Velcro tabs. You can also use Glue Dots in place of the Velcro.
Step 1: Start with an empty, clean bag and cut off either end to make a square.
Step 2: Tape the open ends closed.
Step 3: Take each side and fold over about an inch-and-a-half and crease.
Step 4: After you've got all sides creased, fold up two at a time and secure in the corner with Velcro or Glue Dots. Do each corner the same.
Step 5: Fill your new bowl with chips, pretzels, or your favorite snack mix.
Do you and/or your kids like to turn trash into usable items? Do you use recyclables for art? I'd love to read your ideas in the comments!
