Science Students Launch Recycling Program for Rubber Gloves

Chemistry majors go through a lot of synthetic rubber gloves. On any given day at the College of Charleston that could mean hundreds of pairs of the tight-fitting blue or purple nitrile gloves. Until recently, those gloves were simply discarded into the local waste stream (the ones contaminated with toxic solutions are neutralized first). But now, a new program will ensure that the majority of them are recycled.

Why recycling fluorescent light bulbs is important

Scientists have studied the effects of mercury exposure for decades, and the information is undeniable — mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin. Mercury has been definitively connected with neurological and behavioral disorders, and yet, lamp manufacturers still make mercury-based fluorescent bulbs. In fact, even with this knowledge, the EPA banned the production of incandescent bulbs more than 20 years ago, putting much of America’s lighting future into fluorescents. First, let us understand why mercury is used. A fluorescent bulb works by exciting phosphorescent material with electricity. The excited phosphorescent material gives off light. There needs to be mercury vapor inside the tube to carry a charge of electricity and create the light.

SUBARU LAUNCHES PARTNERSHIP WITH TERRACYCLE FOR “SUBARU LOVES THE EARTH”

Subaru of America, Inc., announced a new partnership with TerraCycle® to help divert hard-to-recycle waste from landfills and incinerators through the automaker’s environmentally-focused philanthropic platform, Subaru Loves the Earth. With less than a quarter of the 230 million tons of trash generated annually in U.S. getting recycled, Subaru and TerraCycle are teaming up to intercept and repurpose hard to recycle items.

Roxbury Schools Celebrate Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day last Sunday, two Roxbury Schools celebrated the day through sustainable programs. The Eisenhower Middle School Builders Club with the assistance of club advisors, Elizabeth Tucker and Marie Pessolano celebrated the day by cleaning up Eyland Avenue. This club is the middle school version of Kiwanis, Key Club, K-Kids which meets every two weeks after school and does community service projects. At the elementary level, Franklin School did its annual earth day poster contest based on the Earth Day Network theme. This year’s theme is to stop plastic pollution and the marine animals.
