A Szimpla budapesti romkocsma is csatlakozott idén a TerraCycle Csikk Brigád névre hallgató csikk-újrahasznosító programjához, mely segít csökkenteni a dohányzás okozta környezeti károkat.

Tom Szaky fiatal egyetemistaként alapította a TerraCycle-t, amely nehezen újrahasznosítható csomagolásokat és termékeket gyűjt, hogy innovatív új termékeket gyártson belőlük. A cég ma már világszerte 26 országban gyűjti azon használt csomagolásokat és termékeket, amelyek egyébként hulladéklerakókra kerülnének.

Clean Up Australia Day will be held this year on Sunday 2 March. The annual event provides a simple way for people to clean up, fix up and conserve the Australian environment. For the very first time, volunteers will this year be able to safely collect cigarette butts for recycling. Almost 6000 satchels will be distributed to volunteers, including businesses and community groups.

A TerraCycle Magyarország Kft. a Hulladékcsökkentési Hét keretében vállalta, hogy a gyűjtőpartnerénél, a HungaroControl Zrt.-nél a program ideje alatt keletkező cigarettacsikkeket újrahasznosítja, hogy azokból újra műanyagot és környezetbarát termékeket készítsen. A gyűjtés a TerraCycle folyamatosan futó cigarettacsikk-gyűjtő programja részeként valósult meg, így nem csak a Hulladékcsökkentési Hét ideje alatt, hanem azon kívül is folyamatosan fut.

Local members of the Surfrider Foundation have a simple message for smokers: Hold on to your butt. The environmental group’s multi-city campaign urges smokers to dispose of their cigarette butts somewhere other than streets, parks and beaches, proclaiming: Beaches and Streets Are Not Ashtrays. For now, there is a single disposal canister for spent cigarettes on Broad Street next to the Victoria Event Centre, but the plan is to add several more. Six additional units have been ordered and places to install them will be identified, said Lucas Harris, vice-chairman of Surfrider’s South Island Chapter. “We’re just chomping at the bit to start getting these things out there and spread the word in the community so that people see them in the street.” Smoker Bernard Boerkamp walked past the Broad Street container Friday and said he welcomes it. “I always look for places like this,” he said, cigarette in hand. “The streets are full of butts.” Another fan is Darren Douglas, part of the Downtown Victoria Business Association Clean Team. Douglas’s regular routine has him picking up all sorts of trash from streets and sidewalks, and he said cigarette butts are always in good supply. He said you can find butts almost anywhere, but they can be a real problem outside night spots.“Years ago, they used to have ashtrays everywhere,” Douglas said as he made his rounds along Broad. He said he is all for having disposal units geared to smokers, but questioned whether they would be used. “Like garbage cans, people throw their stuff right beside them.” Surfrider plans to ship the collected butts to TerraCycle, a recycling outfit. “One of the focuses of Surfrider is to get cigarette butts out of ocean, out of the garbage stream, off the ground,” said Mike Redpath, a member of the group. “Cigarette material is recyclable.” Plastic from cigarette filters can be used in building pallets, while the leftover paper and tobacco can be composted.

Több mint félszáz vendéglátóhely, szálloda és iroda csatlakozott már országszerte a TerraCycle és a Philip Morris Magyarország Kft. közös cigarettacsikk-gyűjtő programjához, hogy az általuk összegyűjtött dohányhulladék környezetbarát újrahasznosításra kerüljön.

Az év végére már több mint hetven vendéglátóhely (étterem, romkocsma, bár), szálloda és iroda csatlakozott országszerte a TerraCycle legfrissebb akciójához, a cigarettacsikk-gyűjtéshez: a dohányhulladékot környezetbarát módon újrahasznosítják. A programban leginkább vendéglátó-ipari helyek vehetnek részt, magánszemélyek csak úgy, ha a cigarettahulladékot elviszik a gyűjtőpontokra. Az akció célja az, hogy minél kevesebben szennyezzék a környezetüket.

A TerraCycle bevezetésével nyitották meg az EWWR-hetet az Országos Hulladékgazdálkodási Ügynökségnél. A szervezet épületének minden emeletére kihelyeztek egy TerraCycle-dobozt, amelybe abban a néhány napban és azóta is, bele lehet tenni a Chio termékek csomagolását. Ezeket a magyar származású Tom Szaky vezette amerikai cég hasznosítja majd újra, ahogyan akét, dohányzásra kijelölt helyről összegyűjtött cigi csikkeket is. Előbbiek erős táskák, utóbbiak például műanyag padok gyártása során kerülnek újrahasznosításra, miután a TerraCycle erre előkészítette azokat.
