Two New Jersey companies have partnered with Walmart stores in the Northeast to put non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle margarine tubs to a new "green" use -- as flower pots.
The companies working with the retailer are Garden State Growers, which grows many types of plants on its 500-acre site, and TerraCycle, which collects waste that is non-recyclable or difficult to recycle and puts it to new use.

Beginning today and running through May 21, shoppers at the store can bring in old flip-flops for recycling, turning those summer shoes into children’s playgrounds.
By bringing in these hard-to-recycle products to their local stores, consumers help keep waste out of their community landfills, said Stacey Cusack, the spokesperson for
TerraCycle, the New York-based “upcycling” and recycling company that is working wth the clothing chain to urge the recycling. Founded in 2001, TerraCycle is the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable post-consumer waste, Cusack says.

Office Depot to recyle hard-to-dispose of items.
TerraCycle Inc. is participating in
Earth Month collections throughout the United States. TerraCycle has teamed up with organizations and school groups to collect used flip-flops and used pens. The program runs April 22 through May 21, a press release from TerraCycle said.
Shoppers can deposit their old flip-flops in colorful collection bins found inside the Old Navy Store at 8881 Ladue Rd. in Ladue.
TerraCycle will then recycle the flip-flops into playground materials that will be donated to communities around the country. This is the first time any nationwide retailer has initiated a large-scale effort to collect and recycle hard-to-dispose-of items like flip-flops.
