Visitors who bring specially marked Polly-O String Cheese packaging to the Six Flags over Georgia in Atlanta will receive $15 off general admission any day of the week or a Free Kid’s Ticket with purchase of general admission ticket on weekdays.   What a fabulous offer!! The packaging will be sent to TerraCycle to be recycled into eco-friendly products. This prevents the normally non-recyclable cheese packaging from ending up in a landfill! Visitors can continue recycling packaging that is usually non-recyclable by signing up for TerraCycle’s Brigade program, through which these items are collected. For every piece of trash that a Brigade sends in, they will receive two points, which can be put towards a specific charity gift or converted to cash and donated to the participant’s charity of choice.

With all the talk of making packaging biodegradable, compostable, recycled and recyclable, one option seems to have been left out of the party: reusable.Once a commonplace practice–far before green, sustainability, even environmentalism were a part of the mass consciousness–this simple, practical, common sense use of resources occurred in several sectors, milk being the most common. But even beer often included a 1-2 cent rebate for returning bottles (or so my Pop tells me!) Now it’s barely a part of the conversation. Why is this? Have we become so convenience oriented that having to do anything more than put something in the blue bin is too much effort? It’s not completely off the map, as milk in returnable glass jars is still practiced by Strauss Family Creamery on a regional basis. Pay a deposit amount for the bottle, get it credited back when you buy the next bottle. Growlers are another example, being large resealable glass bottles of beer you can buy from brewpubs, getting a deal on subsequent refills. But in both cases, these are locally focused. Could something like this happen on a national level? I can hear you coming up with a ready list of why not. I say to you, why not work around these obstacles, or create a whole new way to make packaging reusable, “repurposable”?

Six Flags Recycling Event/Discount with Kraft Cheese Thursday June 16, 2011 - Monday October 10, 2011 Six Flags Theme Park 121 New York Avenue Trenton, New Jersey Get Directions Kraft and Six Flags are offering discounts at parks across the country for visitors who bring in specially marked string cheese packaging for recycling. The packaging will be sent to my company, TerraCycle, and made into plastic products including plastic lumber and plastic pavers. Visitors who bring specially marked Kraft String Cheese packaging to Six Flags will receive $15 off general admission any day of the week. Polly-O packaging (only available on the East Coast) is good for $15 off general admission every day, or a free kids ticket with purchase of general admission on a weekday. Six Flags and Kraft have teamed up with TerraCycle to collect and recycle the cheese packaging. Normally, this packaging is not recyclable in most areas of the country , and this is the first time it will be recycled! An important component of the Elementary Program has been understanding the importance of our community and protecting the environment. Students learned that some of the products we use, like Capri Sun drink pouches, are non-recyclable. As a result, in October of 2010 our class decided to collect drink pouches and send them to TerraCycle, a company that turns drink pouches, chip bags, and candy wrappers into backpacks, coolers, folders, lunch boxes, and other cool products. TerraCycle will give our program 2 cents for every drink pouch collected and we are proud to say that we have collected a total of 1,313 drink pouches! The Elementary Program will continue to collect drink pouches throughout the summer and into the next academic year. If you consume Capri Suns or any other brand of drink pouches we encourage you to drop them off at our Elementary Program Recycling Station.
