ELIMINATING THE IDEA OF WASTE®

More gear we love to eat (with)

We already had all the big essentials (tents, sleeping bags) for our recent canoe camping trip, but we had some new gadgets and food that turned out to be fun additions.

Food:

GoGo squeeZ Apple: One of the things I consistently miss when we’re out in the woods for a few days is fresh fruit. It’s heavy and bruises easily, so it’s not practical to bring along. Dry fruit is okay, and dried fruit strips are better than nothing. We’ve tried apple sauce containers in the past, but you need to dig out a spoon (and who wants to do more dishes anyway) and pack the containers out. So it was with delight that I discovered the GoGo squeez applesauce. We found it through my cousin and his wife, who fed one to their 16-month-old  while we were all out walking earlier this summer. Though probably meant for kids, the GoGo packets work great for grown-ups on the trail as well. You just twist off the top and squeeze or suck out the apple sauce. They come in other flavors as well (AppleBanana, AppleStrawberry, etc). I found ours at Target – I think it was about $3 or $4 for a box of 4. The packets fold up small when empty and are recyclable through TerraCycle.

Recycling company tests chip bag

You know those crinkly snack bags? The ones made of foil or other materials that aren't easily recyclable? Now someone wants them. Tom Szaky and Trenton, N.J.-based TerraCycle have made a successful business out of taking things no one else wants and turning them into cool products that people will buy. Recently, Szaky announced that Hamilton Township, just outside Trenton, had been selected for a national pilot project to collect chip bags. Through an arrangement with Frito-Lay, TerraCycle already collects 0.05 percent — not much, true — of chip bags through its Brigade collection programs, which offers student groups and other organizations money for sending in loads of chip bags that otherwise would be discarded. Now, however, through its new "Chip in for Change" pilot, TerraCycle wants to increase the amount collected to at least 10 percent — closer to the average recycling rate of plastic bottles. To do that during the trial, which began July 11 and runs through Oct. 31, Hamilton Township will need to collect 114,930 chip bags (38,310 per month), according to TerraCycle. For every 50,000 chip bags collected, $250 will be donated to local charities or nonprofits.

TerraCycle Recycled Products Review

Have you seen TerraCycle products? I had heard about the company and had even sent drink pouches in for recycling through a co-op we were in a few years ago, but I hadn't seen the products. I was excited to be able to check them out for this review.
When I received the box of items, my oldest daughter was standing next to me. When she saw me pull out the lunchbox, her eyes grew wide and she said, "Jessica has been saying how much she would love one of those Capri Sun recycled lunchboxes!" I had no idea! However, it just happened to be the day before Jessica's 13th birthday. So, guess what I did? Yep. I wrapped that baby up with the rest of the awesome TerraCycle items- a folder, pencil case, and a notebook, and I gave them to her for her birthday! She was thrilled!

Happy Flip Flop Friday!

Happy Flip Flop Friday! It looks like my favorite budget friendly store Old Navy has joined forces withTerracycle to help us all recycle our old flip flops. What a great idea. Every time you send your old flip-flops to TerraCycle, you’ve done a green deed for Mother Nature by diverting waste from our landfills. To show our gratitude, for every shipment of about 25 pairs of flip-flops, or 50 individual flip-flops (about 18 pounds), you will receive exclusive coupons from Old Navy to distribute to the participants who helped you collect. It’s totally free to participate in a TerraCycle Brigade. There are no signup or participation fees, and the shipping is covered by the program. Once you’ve joined the Flip-Flop Brigade, follow the steps below to earn your Old Navy coupons:
  1. Collect about 25 pairs, or 50 individual, flip-flops (all brands are accepted) and fill up a box or bag. Remember to always reuse a shipping box or bag and use eco-friendly padding as needed. To receive your Old Navy coupons, you must ship at least 18 lbs of flip-flops.
  2. Download a pre-paid shipping label from terracycle.com. Just visit your TerraCycle account online, and click “SHIP US YOUR WASTE”. You can print it out yourself or request a label from TerraCycle.
  3. Ship the box to TerraCycle by affixing the pre-paid postage label and dropping it off at a UPS location.
