Is there a role for government in outsmarting waste? Instead of voluntary EPR programs (such as TerraCycle has innovated), should there be an expansion of mandatory EPR laws? Should other laws or policies require producers to take more responsibility for the waste that their products generate and for the environmental impact associated with that waste?  

Tom Szaky, explores why the garbage crisis exists and explains how we can solve it by eliminating the very idea of garbage. To outsmart waste, Szaky says, we first have to understand it, then change how we create it and finally rethink what we do with it. The following excerpt from the introduction, teaches us that waste need not be the final stage.

Terracycle, l’entreprise sociale de notre pionnier Tom Szaky a converti le pays des cigarettiers au recyclage des tonnes de déchets qu’ils produisent !

En effet, une étude américaine a révélée que 88 millions kg de mégots de cigarettes polluent le sol américain chaque année. Tom a ainsi mis en place un système de collecte, à grande échelle, pour les métropoles. Après des tests dans des villes canadiennes, La Nouvelle Orléans est la première ville a rejoindre ce programme de collecte et recyclage à grande échelle des cigarettes.

Tel est l’engagement de TerraCycle, qui propose de transformer des déchets habituellement non recyclables. Les déchets collectés sont transformés en nouveaux produits comme par exemple des bancs publics recyclés ou des sacs-à-dos upcyclés.
