Terracycle has made that easy with its candy wrapper-recycling program.The candy wrapper-recycling program is available to charitable organizations throughout any of the continental United States through.

Upcycling company TerraCycle also collects snack food wrappers, transforming them into bags, scrapbooks and more. Meanwhile, on a smaller scale, many people have crafted their own products - like the Skittles wallet above - to use themselves or sell online.

We had enough and we took our case straight to the top! All the way to the top, all the way to the Neal Supreme Court. Okay maybe it wasn't quite so drastic, but to my fantastic 4th graders we had some serious legal issues to debate and debate we did! Laura Candler from Corkboard Connections has a fun project titled Green Court Claims. Here is a summary of how we put this fun project to the test. To begin we discussed what we were all familiar with, recycling, although very few claimed they did it. The most common material that students recycled were soda cans. This led to the discussion of how there are many companies that are "going green", claiming that their products are environmentally safe. This intrigued them, and they set out on a classroom mission to find products with some type of claim. After a few short minutes they were finding all kinds of things claiming to be of recycled materials or environmentally safe. It was amazing how many items they found in a short amount of time. After our classroom scavenger hunt they were sent on their first mission. They were to go home and look for items in their own house that claimed to be "green". They came back with a wide variety of claims including tissues, cleaning products, plastic bags, and even dog food! TerraCycle Notebooks- these notebooks are made from recycled candy wrappers. It was the first time I had seen one, but I do have to admit they were fairly cool!

Most of the things in your room right now will eventually become garbage. That’s the simple idea that in 2001 drove college freshman Tom Szaky to launch Terracycle, a company that collects waste and converts it into new products. For example, Skittles wrappers are combined to become a kite, while Honest Tea containers become a laptop case. His unusual concept has turned Terracycle into a $16 million company with roughly 100 employees at its Trenton, N.J., headquarters. EL: How did it all begin? Szaky: We started by producing liquid worm poop in used soda bottles, because my friends were using worm poop on their plants as an organic fertilizer. That was the beginning of making products out of garbage.

Upcycling takes recycling to a whole new level. A product or material, like a CapriSun juice pouch or Skittles candy wrapper, products made famous by TerraCycle, is made into something of higher value. The purse or wristlet made with the original materials is far more valuable than the used wrapper on its own, even if that wrapper is recycled. The same goes for upcycling your content. Rather than merely recycling it, why not add to it for increased value. Rework it into a new thought, offer new opinions, ask new questions, based on your original content, or someone else’s in order to create more value.

Terracycle is a company that collects and "upcycles" different kinds of waste packaging and turns that waste into new consumer products. Repurposed products include pencil cases made from Oreo cookie wrappers, kites from Skittles packages, backpacks from Capri Sun drinks pouches and natural plant fertilizer made from worm excrement that is packaged in empty soda bottles. These upcycled products are available for sale in several large national chain stores including Home Depot, Walmart and Wholefoods Markets. So far, Terracycle has collected over 1.5 billion tons of waste. In Lays potato chip packets alone, over two million tons of waste has been diverted from landfills.

Manlius (WSYR-TV) – On the final day of school, students at Fayetteville Elementary learned an important lesson – one that will likely stay with them for the rest of their lives. On Thursday, the students collected a year’s worth of used juice boxes – thousands of them – and sent them off to Terracycle, a company that specializes in getting new uses from trash. At Terracycle, old juice pouches might become a messenger bag, Skittles wrappers might become a kite, or Starburst packing, a boom box. Teacher Matt Titus got the ball rolling with one class and now the entire school is participating. And the kids are aware that they’re making a difference.
