REDLANDS IndigiScapes is doing its bit to save the planet by going zero-waste with TerraCycle, a recycling group that deals with hard-to-recycle waste.
It has installed a TerraCycle media storage waste box, a contraption that recycles media storage equipment like old CDs, memory sticks and cassette tapes that can’t otherwise be dealt with through regular recycling systems.
IndigiScapes houses a zero waste box in its resource recovery station, a trolley to be used around the centre during events and off-site as required.
The waste box accepts various waste streams from hairnets to mail room supplies.
Once the box is full, it is returned to TerraCycle for recycling using the pre-affixed shipping label.
TerraCycle general manager Jean Bailliard said it was encouraging to see local schools, businesses and community organisations getting involved.
TerraCycle transforms the collected waste into recycled materials or reuses the waste for other purposes like park benches, watering cans and even playgrounds.

All of these can be recycled in your home recycling bin with the exception of cosmetic packaging, which can be done through a new program developed by
Terracycle and L'Oreal Australia.
Nespresso pods are made from aluminium and are easy to recycle. A postage-paid Recycling Satchel can be used to return Nespresso pods for recycling. The satchels can be purchased for $1.90 from your retailer (they hold up to 130 capsules) and then dropped into any Australia Post office or box free of charge. Nespresso pods can also be dropped off in their Boutiques and a network of florists across the country.
TerraCycle run a free collection program for NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Capsules and a paid program for other pods.
Pure Flowers – Nespresso Coffee Pods
Nespresso has joined with recycling and upcycling experts TerraCycle Australia to expand their recycling program at additional collection points around the country at florists, garden centres and nurseries. Lane Cove residents can now recycle their used Nespresso capsules at no cost by visiting Pure Flowers and dropping their capsules (sealed in any plastic bag which will also be recycled) into the in-store recycling collection box.
The capsules will then be recycled at Nespresso’s recycling plant. Only Nespresso capsules made for in-home consumption are accepted as part of this program.
“We now have several customers who collect capsules on behalf of their work colleagues and households, ready to be dropped off to us – we can’t keep up.”
The used pods are taken by recycling company TerraCycle, which has established a system that separates the aluminium and coffee in used capsules.

Refillable and biodegradable pods are being developed to tackle growing environmental concerns too.
