There is a growing awareness in the business community that the circular economy is not only here to stay, but will continue to gain traction in the coming years, according to new research by GreenBiz and UPS. But the need for a defensible business case is the biggest
barrier standing in the way. The report,
“The Growth of the Circular Economy,” surveyed members of the
GreenBiz Intelligence Panel to gain a greater understanding of key aspects and concepts associated with the circular economy and to identify trends that will help define success for this developing system of commerce.
Typical recycling involves sending off your old cans, bottles, boxes and papers to be re-purposed somewhere far away, sight unseen. TerraCycle and 3D Brooklyn allow you to determine what gets made from recycled materials, thanks to a process that turns used chip and snack bags into plastic filament for use in 3D printing.
A 3D printing company sells trinkets made from plastic bags, such as the ones that typically contain potato chips, that can't normally be recycled.
Core Knowledge Charter School has found a way to make recycling benefit more than just the earth. The school has partnered with TerraCycle, a national organization that promotes recycling, to recycle products such as chip bags, personal hygiene items and e-waste while raising money for the school.
In addition to recycling all acceptable materials that are collected by the Melrose DPW on a weekly basis, the Roosevelt School has formed a partnership with TerraCycle, which collects and recycles items, such as drink pouches, juice boxes, ink cartridges and writing instruments, that are not picked up by the city. The school also recycles its Styrofoam trays through ReFoamIt and expired markers through Crayola.
