Expanded list of workshops, art installations and more for 2017 festival More workshops, art installations, food vendors, and new sustainability efforts are in the works for both campers and day-trippers at this year’s River & Sky Music/Camping Festival, July 20 - 23. The festival, set on the Sturgeon River at Fishers’ Paradise in the community of Field, is known for featuring some 40 emerging Canadian bands over its four days, including this year’s headliners Wintersleep, Timber Timbre, PUP and Weaves.

The winners of the 2017 Los Alamos County Business Recycler of the Year were Chamisa Elementary School for Educational Institute and Pajarito Environmental Education Center for Business/Non-Profit. The Business Recycler of the Year award is sponsored by the Los Alamos County Environmental Services Division and the Los Alamos County Environmental Sustainability Board. The Business Recycler of the Year Award is a great avenue to promote recycling in the business community and get more businesses participating in the recycle program. To become eligible, a business is nominated by a member of the community for contributing to recycling and waste reduction. Los Alamos County Environmental Services received seven nominations for the fifth annual Business Recycler of the Year Award. There were two categories this year, Educational Institute and Business/Non-Profit. Educational Institutes were: Chamisa Elementary School, Los Alamos High School Eco Club, and Aspen K-Kids (sponsored by Kiwanis). Business/Non-Profit nominees were: Merrick & Company, Pajarito Environmental Educational Center, Sirphey and Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church Shop on the Corner. The voting was conducted via an online survey.

Para darle un giro distinto a las actividades para los niños durante este verano, la máxima casa de estudios ofrece un campamento impregnado de conocimiento.

Las vacaciones no serán aburridas en casa y mucho menos si hay opciones como el Campamento de Verano 2017 de la Secretaría de Extensión y Cultura de la UANL que se realizará del 17 al 30 de julio.

Esta vez, el curso, que está dirigido a niños de 4 a 12 años, se llamará "Pequeños Trotamundos" ya que las actividades se basaran en el Año Internacional del Turismo Sostenible para el Desarrollo decretado por la ONU el cual busca crear ciudadanos respetuosos del lugar donde viven.

"En talleres de artes plásticas, de literatura, de danza aérea, de juegos cooperativos, ecología y rally, los niños trabajaran en estos contenidos sobre cómo ser ciudadanos responsables de las ciudades en la que viven y del mundo, en general", afirmó la coordinadora de Cultura Infantil y Juvenil de la UANL, Priscila Narro.

De manera divertida, los niños aprenderán a ser responsables con el ambiente pues tendrán charlas y talleres que impartirán artistas los cuales los enseñará a crear obras de arte con material reciclado.

"Los talleres van a ser impartidos por los integrantes de Foco Teatro, por Orlando Tovar, Deby Baéz, Mariana Cruz, Andy Díaz, ellos principalmente van a hacer las actividades de artes plásticas, de danza aérea, de literatura.

"En el área de ecología, Cinthya Robles-Welsh es quien va impartir estos talleres y con apoyo y colaboración de una empresa regiomontana que se llama Terra Cycle que es una empresa que se dedica a promover el reciclaje y ellos tiene actividades dirigidas a niños", afirmó Narro.

Las actividades se llevarán a cabo de 9:00 de la mañana a 1:00 de la tarde en el Centro Cultural Universitario Colegio Civil aunque el viernes 28 de julio irán a la Casa Universitaria del Libro donde tendrán actividades literarias y un rally para competir y fortalecer el trabajo en equipo.

"Además van a jugar un rally y trotamundos es, precisamente, por este tema de el turismo sostenible, lo que queremos es que los niños sean unos ciudadanos del mundo, aquí en la ciudad en la que viven, pues tratar de cuidarla, cuidar el ambiente, pero siempre salimos a otra parte", dijo la organizadora.

La cooperación es de 2 mil 200 pesos por niño, pero hay precio especial para los hijos de los trabajadores universitarios y para quienes lleven a un hermanito.

"Todavía hay espacio, todavía pueden inscribirse, estamos bien con eso, y tiene un costo, también, el costo es de 2 mil 200 pesos, por las dos semanas de campamento, si solamente deciden asistir una semana, no hay ningún problema y se paga solamente la mitad, mil 100 por semana.

"A las familias universitarias que laboran en cualquier instancia de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, les estamos ofreciendo un 50% de descuento y al público en general tiene la oportunidad de tener un descuento, a partir, del segundo hermanito, ya solamente paga la mitad", señaló.

Es la séptima ocasión que se realiza este campamento de verano y los organizadores no recuerdan que algún niño se haya aburrido alguna vez.

Además, para cuidarlos, los organizadores tendrán personal de primeros auxilios que atienda cualquier emergencia.

"Pueden inscribirse aquí mismo en Colegio Civil, pueden asistir en un horario de 10:00 de la mañana a 5:00 de la tarde, a la recepción del Colegio Civil, aquí pueden llenar sus formatitos, con toda la información de sus niños y pueden llamar también al 13404350 que es el teléfono de aquí", añadió.

The Town of Okotoks' commitment to recycling has benefited the Okotoks Food Bank. Through the Febreze Frenzy nationwide contest, which launched in March with TerraCycle and Febreze, the Town recycled pieces of home care and air freshener products which typically aren't considered recyclable.Okotoks won the contest by recycling a total of 1,724 pieces. To recognize the win, TerraCycle and Febreze awarded the Town with a $200 credit that's redeemable for cash to any school or organization.

In Hillsboro, it takes a village. More accurately, at the July 15 Celebrate Hillsboro event, it'll take four villages — each focusing on a different attribute of a growing, thriving city. Celebrate Hillsboro will once again set up "villages" — booths designed to entertain and educate individuals and families with interactive activities — from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. that Saturday. The village concept "highlights in a way that is easily identifiable and memorable," says Patrick Preston, public affairs manager for the city of Hillsboro. "It's a more efficient use of space than a long row of booths. Last year we had thousands of people go through the villages in the seven hours they were open."
