Students at Alain L. Locke Elementary have been collecting items to recycle through TerraCycle’s campaign to “outsmart waste.”  Ms. Adebiyi’s class won the most recent competition by bringing in over 2,000 items!  Her class celebrated by having a day without school uniforms.

Jamie Petermann was named the 2011 recipient of the Herbert R. Drinkwater Award and Ryan Freeburg was named the recipient of the Bill Donaldson Award at the city’s annual employees’ award ceremony. The Drinkwater award, in its 13th year, goes annually to a Scottsdale city employee or employees who set an outstanding example through their volunteerism and dedication to serving others. Communications Dispatcher Petermann embodies the essence of "serving our community."  She has created, organized and managed several programs over the last few years that benefit non-profit organizations such as the Chrysalis Shelter, St. Mary's Food Bank, Scottsdale Senior Center and the city’s Vista Del Camino social services center.  “This individual embodies the essence of serving our community,” said Mayor Jim Lane in presenting the award. “She dedicates her time and effort not only to Scottsdale, but to the entire Valley and even globally.” She also is an avid supporter of Beat the Heat, a city program that aids seniors and Terracycle, which recycles material into products such as lunch and tote bags. One of her recent projects is “Make a Difference Day” a national campaign which she supports through fundraising and collection efforts.

As of July 2010, Brigade participants can earn a 5x donation credit on their first shipment. That means the first 25 pieces in a large shipment you send in will be credited at $0.10 each. The initiative encourages consumers to save and return Danone yoghurt pots that they are unable to recycle at home, so that Terracycle can make them into new products. This innovative approach not only introduces an alternative to sending waste to landfill but also supports both the Courtauld 2 packaging and supply chain targets.

TerraCycle and Capri Sun have reached a major milestone in the Drink Pouch Brigade and an area school is being named America's Best Brigade for helping them do it.  They've just reached the 50 millionth pouch collected mark, which means that $1 million has been paid to schools adn non-profits across the country just for sending us this waste. TerraCycle uses this waste as raw material to make affordable, eco-friendly products.  Del Rey Elementary School in King City is among the Top 100 Collecting Schools out of about 30,000 nationwide that participate in TerraCycle's Drink Pouch Brigade, a free fundraising program that pays $.02 per unit of waste collected.
