Hillsborough High School Industrial Technology teacher Tim Zavacki is exchanging the school’s trash for cash.
Zavacki’s partnered with Terracycle, the retailer focused on creating products from hard-to-recycle or non-recyclable items, to collect with chip packages, cereal boxes, empty glue bottles and sticks, juice containers and more, ensuring the items stay out of a landfill—and nets money for a school club to boot.

We go through A LOT of juice pouch drinks during the summer and during sports seasons. I have a box sitting on the counter that the empty juice pouches go into; when we have filled the box, we will send them off to Terra Cycle, a company dedicated to finding ways to reuse waste materials so that it does not end up in a landfill. Every year, billions of drink pouches end up in dumpsters and landfills across America. TerraCycle, an eco-friendly recycler, converts the drink pouch material into innovative products from tote bags and pencil cases to plastic lumber and pavers.
TerraCycle awards points for the approved juice pouches received, and the points can be redeemed for a variety of charitable gifts or for a payment of $0.02 to the school.
The Garfield Greensters have collected more than 13,000 pouches and earned $260.
The Garfield recyclers are also part of the The Dream Machine program that gives schools a change to earn rewards and compete for prizes in their recycling efforts.
