Op 13 februari begint de 40dagentijd. Een tijd van bezinning en voorbereiding op Pasen. Ieder zoekt een eigen manier om stil staan bij het leven en alles wat zich daarin afspeelt. Daar zijn we als kerkelijke gemeenschap mee bezig vanuit ons geloof. Dit gebeurt op veel momenten en in verschillende groepen in onze gemeente. Vanuit de catechesegroepen van de Protestantse Gemeente te Woudsend e.o. is tijdens de Turbodienst van 10 februari het startsein gegeven voor een bijzondere actie in de veertigdagentijd. Het thema van deze dienst was "Consuminderen". Tijdens deze dienst is kleding ingezameld voor het goede doel. Zo komt wat wij teveel hebben bij mensen terecht die het minder goed hebben. Daarnaast stond in de hal een grote vaas met pennen en stiften die zijn afgeschreven. Het doel is om in veertig dagen zoveel mogelijk pennenstiften in te zamelen. Deze worden gerecycled tot nieuwe voorwerpen. En voor iedere pen/stift krijgen we nog 2 eurocent om te besteden aan een goed doel. Vanuit de catecheseleiding is besloten hieraan mee te doen. We nodigen u allemaal uit hieraan mee te doen, zodat we met heel Woudsend een mooi bedrag kunnen inzamelen voor een goed doel wat binnenkort bekend zal worden gemaakt. Gun een pen een tweede leven. Balpennen, markeerstiften, vulpennen: vroeg of laat eindigen de meeste schrijfwaren in de afvalbak. Het kan ook anders. De schrijfwaren Brigade, een initiatief van BIC en TerraCycle, maakt het mogelijk om alle gebruikte schrijfwaren te verzamelen en gratis op te sturen voor recycling. Er worden dan weer nieuwe duurzame producten als pennenbakjes of gieters van gemaakt. Lege pennen en stiften inzamelen: Op school of thuis heb je vast wel lege pennen rondslingeren. Of misschien gooi je ze altijd meteen weg? Zonde, want schrijfwaren kunnen gerecycled worden! Samen met je school kun je meedoen aan een mooi initiatief van BIC en TerraCycle. Verzamel al jullie lege pennen, stiften en markers in een doos en stuur die gratis op. Je verdient er geld mee voor een goed doel of een schoolproject en de schrijfwaren worden gerecycled tot gieters, prullenbakken en pennenbakken. PLAINFIELD — The Freedom Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization will host an electronics and TerraCycle recycling event from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 23 at the school, 11600 Heritage Meadows Drive.   The Freedom PTO will receive the current rate for aluminum cans and a flat rate for all other items depending on what is brought in. All proceeds will benefit the PTO’s Classroom Technology Purchase fund.   Community members may drop off household electronics.   Community members can also drop off items for TerraCycle, which makes consumer products from pre- and post-consumer materials.   Those items include candy wrappers, cheese wrappers and bags, chip bags, lunch kits, plastic cups, foil drink pouches, toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes and plastic toothbrush packaging, personal care/beauty products and household cleaners.

Desde el pasado mes de diciembre, el cole Palacio de Noja participa en una iniciativa de Terracycle llamada "Navidades recicladas" que consiste en recoger material de escritura de plástico (bolis, rotus, tippex, pegamentos...) que estén gastados o no se puedan utilizar. A lo largo de estas semanas, los niños y niñas del cole han recogido 45 kilos de material, lo que nos ha servido para ganar el segundo premio a nivel nacional. En total, hemos obtenido 11.000 puntos, que son canjeablesúnicamente por dinero para donaciones a organizaciones sociales y/o medioambientales.

Last fall, The Daily Tar Heel’s editorial board wrote that Greeks, as an entire subset of UNCstudents, don’t recycle. This board mentioned the Greek Sustainability Council, but did not acknowledge its accomplishments/goals regarding sustainable living in the Greek community. The reporter claimed Greeks don’t recycle evidenced by cans littering some fraternities’ lawns. Although cans may sit around for longer than some homeowners would tolerate, this does not mean they are thrown in the trash. Recently, Pi Kappa Phi began recycling Solo cups, through a company called TerraCycle.

This cliché has translated into success for one young entrepreneur.  Tom Szaky is co-founder and CEO of TerraCycle, Inc., the leading player in “upcycling”, or turning disposable items into new products:  fertilizers from worm poop, backpacks from juice pouches and reusable tote bags from plastic bags. The company has been named the producer of the most eco-friendly brands in America. Szaky sees a new model for doing business in the future: eco-capitalism. Forget recycling and trying to reduce Americans’ consumption, he says. Instead, get rid of the idea of garbage and waste altogether. “The only reason waste is waste is because we haven’t figured out what to do with the material once we use it the first time. If you can find uses for waste, you can eliminate the idea of waste,” says Szaky.

Results for 2011-12 include: More than 75 unique media placements in CSR, environmental and business trade publications–more than 100 million media impressions; thought leadership through bylined blog posts and interviews; 13 conference presentations on the benefits of EPR; and three new 50% rPET products launched,  creating awareness of rPET and recycling in the Baltimore/Maryland and California markets, resulting in more than 56 million media and consumer activation impressions.—Scott Van Camp Honorable Mentions:

No saben con cuánto dinero van a contar, así que han decidido planificar el año haciendo reajustes y apretándose el cinturón. Y es que Asbem ya acabó 2012 en números rojos y no quieren que la situación se vuelva a repetir. Por ello, los 70.000 euros presupuestados para el ejercicio anterior los han reducido en ésta hasta 50.000. «A ver si podemos llegar. De momento, para cubrir la diferencia seguro que no tenemos dinero. No podemos endeudarnos así», reconoció Begoña Castro, trabajadora social del colectivo.
