TerraCycle is an international upcycling company that takes difficult to recycle packaging and turns it into affordable, eco-friendly products. Founded in 2001, they are the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable post-consumer waste. TerraCycle works with over 30 major brands in the U.S. (and in a growing number of other countries) to collect used packaging and products (chip bags, candy wrappers, juice pouches, pens, toothbrushes, etc.) that would otherwise be destined for landfills. Here are a few of their programs if you are interested in learning more about how YOU can reduce your carbon footprint and upcycle your trash!
- Old Navy – From April 22 through May 21 you can drop off used flip flops at any Old Navy store in the U.S. TerraCycle will recycle the flip flops into four public playgrounds (my guess is to the recycle the flip flops into playground mats?)
National retailers are hosting events in honor of Earth Day, April 22.
Target, the discount chain, plans to give free reusable bags to its first 1 million shoppers Sunday. Last year, the retailer warned, most stores ran out within a few hours.
Office Depot and Old Navy are encouraging consumers to recycle their old stuff.
From Sunday through April 23, consumers can take their used pens, markers or mechanical pencils to Office Depot to receive a coupon toward a new product by Sanford, which makes Sharpie, Expo and PaperMate brands. TerraCycle, a recycling company, plans to turn the used writing tools into trash cans and desk organizers.
From April 22 to May 21, shoppers can drop their old flip-flop sandals in collection bins at Old Navy stores for the Flip Flop Replay. The rubbery flip flops will become playground equipment that TerraCycle plans to donate to communities nationwide.
