PLAY FOR TODAY, PLAY FOR TOMORROW: THE SHIFT TOWARD ECO-FRIENDLY TOYS AND SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

RECYCLING, TERRACYCLING, CONSUMER CONVENIENCE, AND AWARENESS

One of the biggest problems toymakers face — and that is noticed by parents — is the difficulty in recycling both toys and their packaging waste. The massive popularity of surprise-and-reveal toys certainly lit a fire under parents to call for better waste management, and for MGA Entertainment (MGAE) — makers of L.O.L. Surprise! — the solution was a partnership with a company that already had experience tackling hard-to-process toys: TerraCycle.     The vast difference in materials used to create certain toys presents a problem when it comes to sorting and processing. TerraCycle can solve that, processing toys to be recycled into new creations, such as park benches, flower pots, and play spaces. The Hasbro Toy Recycling Program launched last year as a way for families to send well-loved toys and games to TerraCycle for processing.   Following partnerships with Hasbro and MGAE, ZURU inked a deal this spring to make its Bunch O Balloons 100% recyclable thanks to TerraCycle. Now, perhaps the biggest issue is consumer awareness and action, as parents will have to box their waste materials — both packaging and toys — and print shipping labels from the TerraCycle website before dropping their boxes off to be shipped back.

Why Is It So Damned Hard to Recycle Toys?

That last stat came to me recently by way of Sue Kauffman, public relations manager for TerraCycle, a recycling company that focuses on, interestingly enough, non-recyclable pre-consumer and post-consumer waste. Kauffman put a hard stop on my dreams that I could simply toss L.O.L. dolls, or any of the old toys spilling out of my daughter’s closet, in the recycling bin. The majority of these products, she says, are likely not recyclable at all.

MGA announces UK L.O.L recycling programme will kick off in July

The US programme, formed in partnership with waste specialist Terracycle, launched yesterday. It’s about to become easier to recycle L.O.L Surprise! products thanks to a new programme developed by MGA Entertainment and TerraCycle, a global leader in recycling complex materials. The new, free programme officially launched yesterday in the United States and is available to L.O.L. Surprise! fans. International programmes are set to launch, beginning in the UK in July, while other countries will roll out further in the year. The L.O.L. Surprise! Recycling Programme is open to any interested individual, school, office, or community organisation. Once collected, the packaging is cleaned and melted into hard plastic that can be remoulded to make new recycled products. “TerraCycle is a leader in this field, and we are excited to partner with them as we continually look to push for more sustainable and environmentally friendly products,” said Isaac Larian, CEO and Founder of MGA Entertainment. “Our new partnership with TerraCycle is just one example of our commitment to leaving a healthier planet for kids – this initiative will cost MGA, but it’s worth it. We are also working on, and testing, other sustainable initiatives to take this even further. I hope other leaders in the toy industry will follow suit.” “MGA Entertainment is a great partner, and one that is truly dedicated to making products consumers love, while also taking responsibility for preserving the environment,” said Tom Szaky, TerraCycle’s founder and CEO. “By encouraging future generations to rethink what is waste, together we are making it simple for consumers to have a positive impact on the environment for future generations.” The L.O.L. Surprise! Recycling Programme with TerraCycle allows fans to easily send all L.O.L. Surprise! packaging and products directly to a knowledgeable source, ensuring items are properly disposed of and recycled.
