They’ve been around for a few years already, but like TerraCycle, Recyclebank has been growing and engaging communities around the country with the entrepreneurial enthusiasm of a start-up. Recyclebank actually rewards people with points for their recycling efforts.
My company, TerraCycle, has been obsessed with questions like these, and our strange consumer culture for more than a decade. Our culture of consumption had duped me into thinking that some things, be it a product or a raw material, could be reduced to such uselessness that it can only be defined by the broad label “trash.” It was the single-greatest epiphany of my life, both personally and professionally, because from it TerraCycle was born.
To further facilitate a Zero Waste lifestyle, individuals, businesses and other organizations can also order a
Zero Waste Box from my company, TerraCycle. There are different types of box depending on the amount of waste you want to recycle and the amount of separation that is required
Most consumers will not go out of their way to determine if they can recycle product packaging, so the only other viable solutions from a consumer’s point of view are to: (A) stop buying the product altogether to prevent further waste generation; (B) throw it away with no attempt at recycling; or (C) find an alternative recycling program for the post-consumer waste, such as the new
Zero Waste Boxes offered by TerraCycle, allowing anyone to recycle any non-hazardous solid packaging and other waste.
More than just a recycling company, TerraCycle strives to be a driving force behind increasing environmental awareness and action. Our goal is to be a trusted resource for families, schools, communities, and even corporations to find tips, stats, facts, tactics, and news to help them live a greener, cleaner lifestyle.
Fifth-graders at Hayes Cooper are learning about recycling in a semester long project called Recycling: Lighting the Fire. The class is a member of Terracycle, a company in New Jersey that creatively up-cycles trash into useful products.
They make a lot more than deodorant, but I love Tom’s of Maine for several reasons. They’re passionate about being a positive impact in the world from volunteerism to renewable energy and the company:
- Is cruelty-free and uses vegetarian ingredients with no artificial additives.
- Uses wind energy, recyclable materials and recycles even within the warehouse.
- Donates 10% of yearly profits to nonprofits committed to human, health and environment.
- Is partnered with recycling leader TerraCycle.
This is a primary component of the circular economy and
Cradle-to-Cradle production, topics widely discussed throughout the conference halls and auditoriums of the Annual Meeting. This was even the first year of the WEF’s
Circular Economy Awards, during which TerraCycle received “Highly Commended” recognition. Needless to say, the circular economy is starting to receive the attention it deserves.
