Trying to recycle everything—including hard-to-recycle items like coffee pods and cigarette butts—can come at a high cost... Businesses like TerraCycle act like a go-between, approaching companies making hard-to-recycle products and asking them to pay the cost of recycling. In return consumers can send the products off to a private recycling plant for free, and they feel good about it.

There might be a way to recycle those coffee pods after all. A company called TerraCycle aims to "recycle everything" — from cigarette butts to squeeze pouches. It's funded by the brands selling hard-to-recycle products and consumers willing to cover shipping costs.

Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world. A common sight on sidewalks, roadways and beaches, approximately 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are improperly disposed of, tossed out windows, snuffed out on the ground or dropped into gutters each year... Through the free Cigarette Waste Recycling Program, cigarette butts can be safely disposed of, and fully recycled to a second life. Managed by international recycling company TerraCycle, the program is completely free to participate in and is available to any individual, organization, business or city within Canada – over the legal smoking age of 19, of course.

Ce recyclage, c’est la mission que s’est lancée l’organisme montréalais SAESEM. Son nouveau programme nommé Mégot Zéro vise à récupérer les cigarettes fumées à domicile comme à l’extérieur. Tout un réseau de cendriers de collectes de couleur verte fleurit dans la métropole. 220 ont déjà été installés à travers la ville, d'autres devraient suivre bientôt, à la faveur d'une campagne de financement participatif. Les mégots récupérés sont ensuite envoyés à TerraCycle Canada, le leader mondial du traitement de produits difficiles à recycler. Ce programme environnemental basé à Toronto est capable de transformer les mégots en compost (à partir du papier à cigarette et du tabac) et en mobilier urbain (à partir des filtres).
