Baltimore initiative collects 55K cigarette butts in one neighborhood

Baltimore is one of many cities that TerraCycle has teamed up with in recent years as part of its Cigarette Waste Brigade program. Other participants include VancouverSeattleSt. LouisNew Orleans,Columbia, MO and Salem, MA. For every pound collected, $1 is donated to the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program.

Waterfront Partnership Recycling Program Collects 55,000 Cigarette Butts In First Six Months

Waterfront Partnership sends all collected cigarette litter to TerraCycle, an international recycling company, for recycling into a variety of useful products. TerraCycle then processes separated cigarette waste into organics and plastics. Organics, including leftover tobacco and cigarette paper, are added to non-food compost. Cigarette filters are recycled into a variety of industrial plastic products, such as shipping pallets.

A recycling initiative collected 55,000 cigarette butts during its first six months in the Harbor East neighborhood, according to a news release. The Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore started the program by installing 15 recycling receptacles and now plans to expand into other areas of the Inner Harbor. The Waterfront Partnership used TerraCycle, an international recycling company, to transform the cigarette waste into useful products, such as compost and shipping pallets.

Salem to Add 50 New Cigarette "Butt Bins"

They foul our water and harm marine life and birds,” stated Susan Yochelson, a member of SalemRecycles and Outreach Coordinator for Salem Sound Coastwatch, in the announcement. Salem kicked off the campaign in September of 2015, placing bins around downtown with yellow decals. The butt bins are later emptied and sent to New Jersey based Terra Cycle, where they are recycled into plastic goods.
