ELIMINATING THE IDEA OF WASTE®

FOOD NOTES

Recipe of the week Mother's Day is the most important holiday this week, but tomorrow is another that Americans have embraced in recent years. Cinco de Mayo, a celebration of Mexican liberation, is an excuse to eat Mexican food, and this recipe comes from Trenton's own TerraCycle. According to a spokeswoman, Terracycle partners with companies such as Mission Foods to recycle their non-recyclable packaging and lessen their impact on the environment. Mission Foods shared this recipe.

Go Green for Cinco de Mayo!!!

It's Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holday that is celebrated throughout the globe, and this Cinco de Mayo this cooking mama is going green. Thats right folks we are talking about recycling and going green in our kitchens. We are familiar with the normal recyclables, but what happens to the products that are considered non-recyclable? It is sent to a landfill and sits and can release toxic gases into the air, and poison our water supply. I had the oppertunity to speak with Megan Yarnell from Terracycle, one of the fastest growing green companies in the world. Terracycle has created a nationwide recycling programs for those items that were previously non-recyclable. They upcycle or recycle products like Lay's potato chip bags, Capri Sun drink pouches, and Mission Foods tortilla bags, they turn them into plastic pelets, or re-purpose them.

With Cinco de Mayo arriving tomorrow, what better way to celebrate this major Mexican holiday than enjoying a few delicious Mexican dishes, a Margarita and help to save the environment at the same time? TerraCycle <http://www.terracycle.net./> , a company that up-cycles and recycles food wrappers and other waste into bright backpacks, plant-grow kits, even mini-speakers, has partnered with Mission Foods <http://www.missionmenus.com/Default.aspx>  to collect the usually non-recyclable wrappers from tortillas, chips, and other food products and recycle them. Schools and community groups in the Shore Region can continue recycling even after Cinco de Mayo by forming a TerraCycle Brigade, which would collect packaging, send it to TerraCycle and, in turn, receive two cents per item for its charity of choice. With Mission and TerraCycle, kids and parents alike can indulge in healthy food while taking care of their environment.

Cook, share, recycle: green mango tango dip for Cinco de Mayo

What do cooking, recycling and Cinco de Mayo have in common? A recent partnership between TerraCycle and Mission Foods. TerraCycle, one of the fastest growing green companies in the world today, recycles and “upcycles” waste, including empty soda bottles, cell phones, Elmers glue sticks and bottles, cosmetic packaging and food wrappers. This company, created by Tom Szaky in 2001, started out by packaging and selling organic fertilizer in used soda bottles. Today, they “upcycle” waste into a variety of products such as brightly colored backpacks, garden supplies, toys and mini speakers. TerraCycle is constantly seeking new waste and new ways to help the environment. Their recent agreement with Mission Foods is just in time for Cinco de Mayo. If you use Mission Foods products to create tasty Mexican dishes, save the ordinarily non-recyclable plastic packaging to send to TerraCycle for free. Simply go to the TerraCycle website at www.terracycle.net and join the Tortilla and Tostada bag brigade in order to print out your free shipping label. For every wrapper that you send to the company, TerraCycle will reward you with two points redeemable towards special gifts or cash donations to the charity of your choice.
