TerraCycle is a company that collects difficult-to-recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable, innovative products. TerraCycle upcycles and recycles traditionally non-recycable waste. Terracycle reuses several products such as drink pouches, chip bags and tooth brushes just to name a few. These products keep waste out of our landfills and contribute to a cleaner world.

More than 100 artists are set to participate in the eighth annual Graffiti Jam, which also features performances by local bands DJs and hip hop artists. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at TerraCycle headquarters, 121 New York Ave., Trenton. Trenton’s Vicious Styles Crew and other urban artists will attempt to completely repaint Terracycle’s walls with new artwork.

The Greening of Westford’s Kristina does exactly that. She is the founder of Upcycle It, a program which diverts non-recyclable items, like chip bags and granola bar wrappers, from landfills to a company called TerraCycle where they are turned into useable items. TerraCycle pays Upcycle It two cents per item (as well as all shipping costs).

The Naked Grape takes the reusability of boxed wine's packaging to a new level by allowing customers to send their emptied bags and boxes back to TerraCycle, who will recycle the packaging or “upcycle” it into coasters, wine journals, coin pouches and more. Customers can also join The Naked Grape Wine Box Brigade to raise money for charity with each returned box. So really, you're drinking for a good cause.

This year 100 spray artists will climb ladders and scaffolds or just stand and deliver to display talents and signature styles on the thousands of square feet that make up TerraCycle’s outside walls. Held annually “at the twilight of summer” since 2005, this year’s Jam is set for Saturday, August 10, from noon to 6 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

A mintegy 10 évvel ezelőtt alapított TerraCycle története akkor kezdődött, amikor 2001-ben Szaky a Princeton Egyetem gólyájaként használt szódáspalackokba csomagolt, szerves trágya - vagyis „cseppfolyósított féregürülék " - értékesítésébe kezdett. Azóta a TerraCycle jelentősen bővült.

Can we make money out of other people’s garbage? Well, according to Tom Szaky, the answer is yes, absolutely. Tom is the Founder/CEO of TerraCycle, a successful small business which turns garbage into useful products and, eventually, money.

Eigentlich klar: Nach ein paar Wochen im Gebrauch landet die Zahnbürste im Abfall, ebenso die Tube, aus der die Zahnpaste kommt. Nicht besser ergeht es dem Plastikkugelschreiber. Doch das soll sich nun ändern: Die aus den USA stammende Firma Terracycle bietet auch in der Schweiz ein Recyclingsystem für kleine Plastikteile an. Konsumenten können die gebrauchten Gegenstände sammeln – etwa im Büro, in der Schule oder in einer Zahnarztpraxis – und an Terracycle schicken. Die Firma sorgt dann dafür, dass der Kunststoff wiederverwertet wird. Aus Zahnbürsten werden zum Beispiel Telefonhörer. Als Anreiz kriegen die Sammelnden pro Gegenstand zwei Rappen gutgeschrieben, die sie einer wohltätigen Organisation nach Wahl spenden können. Ermöglicht wird das Ganze durch Sponsoren aus der Privatwirtschaft – bei den Zahnpflegeprodukten kommt das Geld von den Zahnpasta-Marken Elmex, Meridol und Colgate. Terracycle-Geschäftsführer Wolfram Schnelle sagt: «Durch dieses Modell können wir Sachen wiederverwerten, bei denen sich das Recycling bisher aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen nicht gelohnt hat.» In anderen Ländern verwertet Terracycle sogar Zigarettenstummel – in den Filtern gibt es noch nützliche Kunststoffe. «Egal, wie klein ein Gegenstand ist: Haben wir einen ganzen Container davon, lässt sich das Material rezyklieren», so Schnelle.
